Method 1 of 2: Capturing Dratini in the Safari Zone
Step 1. Get a Super Hook
To catch Dratini (by fishing) you will need to use the best hook available in the game. You can find a Super Hook along Route 12, inside the Fisher Guru's house. Talk to him and you will receive a Super Hook in return.
Step 2. Head to the Safari Zone
Dratini can only be captured within the Safari Zone. You will not have to worry about choosing which of your pokemon will face Dratini in combat, as it is not possible to fight inside the Safari Zone. You can reach the Safari Zone from the city of Violet City.
Step 3. Start the fishing session
Dratini can be caught in any of the four areas into which the Safari Zone is divided. To start fishing, cast your line into any body of water you can reach. You have a 15% chance that the Pokemon you catch is a Dratini.
- When a Pokemon touches your hook, you have to press the A Button to make it bite, otherwise it will run away.
- You have a 1% chance of being able to catch a Dragonair, the first evolutionary stage of Dratini.
Step 4. Use a Rock
You have four options you can use to start a fight in the Safari Zone: throw a Bait, throw a Rock or Safari Ball, or run. Throwing a Bait will lower the chances of the pokemon escaping, but it reduces the chances of catching it. Throwing a Rock makes it much easier to catch, but increases the chances of the pokemon running away.
Throwing a Bait followed by a Rock negates the effects of both of these elements. If you want to increase the chances of success for the catch, throw a Rock or a Bait followed by two Rocks
Step 5. Launch a Safari Ball
If the pokemon ball fails to catch Dratini, he will have a chance to escape. If he escapes, you'll have to try a new catch by going back to fishing. If it doesn't run away, you can retry throwing a second Safari Ball on your next game turn.
Step 6. Train your Dratini
After capturing a Dratini pokemon, you can start the training phase to make it evolve into a Dragonite. Step 1. Visit the Celadon Rocket Casino
There you can win a Dratini anytime after reaching Celadon City for the first time. Dratini costs 2800 tokens.
