Steps
Method 1 of 4: Get Dratini by Answering the Dragon's Lair Master's Questions
Step 1. Go to the "Dragon's Lair" which is behind the city of "Blackthorn City"
Enter the cave from the entrance, go down the ladder and reach the edge of the body of water that is inside.
- Make sure you have a free slot on your Pokémon team so that you can accommodate a Dratini specimen.
- Before performing this step, you must have already defeated the city leader of "Blackthorn City", Sandra. After beating her, she will give you a TM ("Technical Machine"). Before entering the "Dragon's Lair" to get Dratini, you must already have this TM.
Step 2. Use a Pokémon that knows the "Whirlpool" move to be able to cross the whirlpool in the water
To meet the area of the body of water where the vortex is present, you will need to head southeast from where you reach the underground lake of the cave. The whirlpool is placed between a rock and a wall along the western side of the lake.
Step 3. Use the "Surf" move to surf the water until you reach a house
You will encounter the buildings if you follow the south-east direction starting from the point where the whirlpool is present in the water.
Step 4. Enter the house
This is the "Dragon's Lair".
Before continuing, save your game progress so that you can start over from this point in case you get a Dratini specimen with unsatisfactory stats
Step 5. Talk to the older man
Answer all the questions that will be asked by showing respect and friendship towards Pokémon. If you answer all the questions and show that you respect and be friends with the Pokémon, you will get a copy of Dratini who knows the "Ultra Fast" move. If not, you will get a Dratini that knows the "Fulmisguardo" move.
- The highest value of Dratini's stats is relative to attack, while the lowest is relative to health points (abbreviated to "HP").
- Dratini is a "Dragon" type Pokémon and will be at a disadvantage when facing "Dragon", "Ice" or "Fairy" type Pokémon.
- Dratini has the "Muta" special ability. This ability is able to heal any damage that Datrini accuses that affects his state.
Method 2 of 4: Capture Dratini inside the Dragon's Lair
Step 1. Go to the "Dragon's Lair" which is behind the city of "Blackthorn City"
Enter the cave from the entrance, go down the ladder and reach the edge of the body of water that is inside.
Step 2. Use the "Surf" move to surf the surface of the underground lake until you encounter a specimen of Dratini
The Dratini specimen that you capture in this way will have a very low level (between 5 and 15) and you will only have a 10% chance of being able to meet it. Alternatively, you can try fishing using a "Good Hook" or "Super Hook" to have a 10% to 30% chance of encountering Datrini.
Step 3. Use an "Ultra Ball" or a "Love Ball" to catch Dratini
"Ultra Balls" have the highest catch rate of all Poke Balls right after "Master Balls". Dratini is extremely difficult to catch, so using "Ultra Balls" can speed up the whole process. Love Balls are used to catch a Pokémon of the opposite sex to the one you are using.
For example, if you are using a male Pokémon and have encountered a female Dratini, using "Love Balls" will give you an advantage
Method 3 of 4: Buy Dratini
Step 1. Go to the city of Goldenrod City
Step 2. Visit Goldenrod City casino
Step 3. Talk to the man in front of the green game table
Step 4. Play the table until you win 2,100 coins
Step 5. Now talk to the elderly man who is in the left corner of the room
Step 6. Buy a copy of Dratini with the money you have won
Method 4 of 4: Capturing Dratini in the Safari Zone
Step 1. Go to the Safari Zone which is located along "Route 48"
In order to gain access to the Safari Zone, you must first have unlocked the story part of the game that takes place in the city of "Olivine City".
Step 2. Go to the "Swamp" area of the "Safari Zone"
You have the right to change the areas of the "Safari Zone", so the "Swamp" area will be the first you will encounter. The first time you enter the "Safari Zone" you will be assigned the mission to find a specimen of Geodude. You will then be assigned a second mission, which will consist of using the Achiever and capturing a specimen of Sandshrew.
Step 3. Use a "Good Hook" or "Super Hook" to fish in the swamp
When you try to fish for a Dratini in the "Swamp" area of the "Safari Zone", you will have a 20% chance of success.
Step 4. Use an "Ultra Ball" or a "Love Ball" to catch Dratini
The "Ultra Balls" have the highest catch rate of all Poke Balls, right after the "Master Balls". Dratini is extremely difficult to catch, so using "Ultra Balls" can speed up the whole process. Love Balls are used to catch a Pokémon of the opposite sex to the one you are using.
For example, if you are using a male Pokémon and have encountered a female Dratini, using "Love Balls" will give you an advantage
Advice
- If you encounter Dratini in the water, use Poké Balls with a high capture rate.
- If you have a free slot in your Pokémon team, the old man you talk to inside the "Dragon's Lair" will immediately hand you a copy of Dratini.
- If you answer the old man's questions correctly, you'll get a copy of Dratini who knows the "Ultra Fast" move (this is a move he can't learn any other way).
