Super Mario 64 DS offers the classic and unforgettable gameplay style of Super Mario 64 with tons of new features made possible by the Nintendo DS. Contrary to what was possible in the original Super Mario 64, you can now play as one of these four characters - Mario, Yoshi, Luigi and Wario! To unlock Luigi, you'll first need to reach King Boo's Refuge and defeat King Boo himself in his underground labyrinth!
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Finding Big Boo's Labyrinth
Step 1. Unlock Mario
To get Luigi, you will need to have already unlocked Mario. There are no exceptions to this rule - you won't be able to get it with Yoshi or Wario. Don't forget to choose Mario before starting.
To unlock Mario, you will need eight stars. Jump into Mario's portrait in the room connected to the minigame room, then face the Goomboss in the level you reach. If you defeat him, you will get the Mario key
Step 2. Enter King Boo's Refuge
Using Mario, head to the castle courtyard. From the entrance to the castle, it is found through the wooden doors and after the long corridor. You will know that you are on the right track if you see a Boo (the ghosts) in the hallway. When in the courtyard, start taking out the Boos until you get a metal cage. Collide with the cage to enter King Boo's lair.
Note that you will need to get the first star in King Boo's Refuge before you can get Luigi. The staircase to the second floor of the building (where the entrance to Luigi's level is located) appears only from the second star onwards
Step 3. Reach the second floor of the building
Choose the second star (or if you have the chance one of the following stars). At the beginning of the level, run into the building in front of you. Climb the ladder to the second floor and enter the door on the far right. The room should contain a wooden platform and a "?" Red.
Step 4. Head to the attic
Hit the "?" Red. Mario should blow up like a balloon and start floating towards the ceiling. Float around the room and reach the door. Note that you can press the DS "R" button to stop floating.
In the original version of Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64, getting to the door was quite difficult - many novice players couldn't find the door and couldn't get there once they found it. In the DS version, however, the red block makes it much, much easier
Step 5. Jump into Luigi's portrait
In the next room, you should see a large portrait of Luigi. You know what to do - jump into the picture!
Part 2 of 3: Walk through the Labyrinth
Step 1. Hear the sound of King Boo's laughter near the doors
After jumping into Luigi's portrait, you will appear in a room, with a large spinning wooden carousel in the center. If you entered King Boo's Labyrinth! The secret to going out is to hear the sound of King Boo's laughter near each door. The door where the noise is loudest is the one you will have to go through!
Note that you can find eight red coins scattered around the maze. While it's not necessary to get Luigi, finding all eight coins will earn you a star
Step 2. Proceed through the maze
In each room of the maze, follow the sound of King Boo's laughter. If you make a mistake (or fall off a ledge), you will return to the beginning of the maze. The precise indications for navigating the labyrinth are the following:
- From the start, enter the door on the right.
- In the next room, carefully run past the eye and enter the door on the left.
- In this room, hit the "?" if you want to collect the coins on the ceiling, then open the door on the right.
- Use the platforms to reach the door on the left side of the room.
- Finally, run along the collapsing bridge and use the platforms to scale the wall. Get off the chimney on the roof.
Step 3. Defeat King Boo
You will fall into a room with a large mirror in front of you. Run up to the mirror and you will see Mario's reflection become Luigi's. After this cutscene, the fight with King Boo will begin. Defeat him to get the Luigi key! It's not very difficult, but you'll have to keep an eye on both Mario and Luigi to win.
During the fight, King Boo will switch between the reflection in the mirror (where Luigi is) and the real Mario. When he is in the mirror, attack him with Luigi, and vice versa. Use the same strategy you use with the other Boos - the kicks and dunks on the ground should blow him away. Watch out for the fireballs
Part 3 of 3: Getting Luigi
Step 1. Head to the character selection room
After the fight, you will get the Luigi key and be transported to the castle courtyard. With this key, you can finally unlock Luigi. Go back to the castle entrance and enter the character selection room - it's the rightmost door on the upper floor.
If you've played the original Super Mario 64, the door to open is the one that leads to the princess's secret slide in the original game
Step 2. Enter the door with the green "L"
Now that you have the key, you can unlock Luigi's door! Luigi goes in and out. Congratulations! You have unlocked Luigi in Super Mario 64 DS!
Step 3. Get used to Luigi's characteristics
When compared to the other characters in Super Mario 64 DS, Luigi has many unique abilities. He is better than the other characters in some respects and worse in others - take a few moments to learn his moves to understand these differences. Luigi's characteristics include:
- It can run on water for several seconds.
- It can perform a pirouette fall after a backward jump (which deals damage).
- He has, along with Yoshi, the best jumping ability in the game and his jumps have a slight hanging effect in the air.
- Runs slightly slower than Mario.
- He is slightly weaker than the other characters (he takes longer to lift heavy objects and walks slower when carrying them).
- He is the fastest swimmer in the game.
- It can become invisible and pass through certain substances when collecting its Power Flower.
Advice
- Make sure you play as Mario, he is the only character you can unlock Luigi with.
- You will need at least 16 stars to access King Boo's Refuge.
