Files ending with the "ODT" extension were created with the "Open Office.org" program or LibreOffice. If you are using Word 2010 or 2013, you can open this type of file simply with a double click. If you have an older version of Word or the Mac version, you will need to convert the file before you can open it.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Use WordPad (Windows)
Step 1. Right click on the file
.odt and select "Open With" → "WordPad".
This method does not work with Windows XP.
If you're using Windows XP or a Mac computer, try an online conversion service or your Google Drive account
Step 2. Click on "File" and select "Save As" → "Office Open XML Document"
Step 3. Name the file and save it wherever you like
The document will now have the extension.doc.
Method 2 of 4: Use a Conversion Service
Step 1. Visit a file conversion site
These websites convert the file for you and provide you with the link to download the converted document. Here are some of the most popular services:

- FreeFileConvert.com - freefileconvert.com
Step 2. Upload the file
.odt you want to convert. The process varies by service, but usually you just need to click an upload button or drag the file into the browser window.
Step 3. Select
.doc as output format (if needed). Some conversion sites support different file types, so you may need to select.doc from a list.
Step 4. Wait for the file to be converted
This usually takes a few moments.
Step 5. Download the converted file
Depending on the service, when the document is ready, you may be directed to the download page or receive an email containing the link to download it.
Method 3 of 4: Use Google Drive
Step 1. Log into Google Drive with your Google account
All Google accounts, including Gmail, allow access to Google Drive. This service, in addition to allowing you to store your files, also works as a converter always at hand.
You can log in to it at drive.google.com
Step 2. Upload the file
.odt in your Drive account. After logging in, you can drag the file into the browser window or click the "New" button and select "Upload file".
Step 3. Double click on the uploaded file
It will then open in the Google Drive document reader.
Step 4. Click the "Open" button at the top of the window
This will convert and open the file in the Google Docs editor.
Step 5. Click on "File" → "Download As" → "Microsoft Word"
This operation downloads the file to the Download folder in.docx format.

Method 4 of 4: Convert a Batch of Multiple Files
Step 1. Open OpenOffice
This method requires you to have the OpenOffice program, but it allows you to convert hundreds of.odt documents to.doc format with just a few clicks.
Step 2. Download the BatchConv macro
This is a file that runs inside OpenOffice and allows you to batch convert many documents at once.
You can download the BatchConv macro from oooconv.free.fr/batchconv/batchconv_en.html and it will be in.odt format
Step 3. Open the file
BatchConv in OpenOffice.
A window will appear that will guide you through the batch conversion procedure.
Step 4. Add the files you want to convert
You can search and add individual files or entire folders that contain multiple documents.
Step 5. Click on the "Export to" menu and select "DOC"
You can also choose to have the converted documents placed in the same original location or you can have them all in one file collection.
Step 6. Click on the "Export List" button to start converting documents
It may take some time if you have a lot of files to convert.
