ASCII codes allow you to type special mathematical symbols, such as the obelo symbol (÷), into programs or documents (this symbol in English is used to indicate the mathematical operation of division and is found on most of the scientific calculators, while in Italy it is often used to refer to a range of contiguous values). The process to be followed to type these special characters varies according to the operating system in use, but is the same for all programs and applications. For example, the method used to insert the obel symbol in a Word document is identical to the one used to insert it into a Google Docs file, however the process to follow will be different between Windows and Mac systems. This article explains how to type the obel symbol on both Mac and PC.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Windows
Step 1. Open a text document
You can use a program like Word, Notepad, or Google Docs.
If you are using a keyboard without a numeric keypad, you will also need to use the "Fn" and "Num Lock" keys. In this way, some keys on the keyboard, usually those occupying the right side, will act as a numeric keypad. Keys that act as a numeric keypad as a second function will be marked with a small number in blue
Step 2. Hold down the Alt key and type the number 0247 using the numeric keypad
Until you release the "Alt" key you will not see any characters appear on the screen.
Make sure you use the numeric keypad to enter the indicated ASCII code. Using the number keys on the normal keyboard will not get the desired result
Step 3. Release the Alt key
When you release the button Alt, the obel symbol will be inserted at the point where the text cursor is located.
- If no characters appear, make sure the "Num Lock" key is on, then try typing the indicated ASCII code again.
- Alternatively, try using the Alt + 246 code.
Method 2 of 2: Mac
Step 1. Open a text document
You can use a program like Word, TextEdit, or Google Docs.
Step 2. Press and hold the ⌥ Option key as you type /.
The button Option is a modifier key that allows you to type special characters and symbols into a document or program. Refer to this web page to find out other key combinations you can use to type special symbols.
Step 3. Release the ⌥ Option key
The obelo symbol (÷) will be inserted at the point where the text cursor is located.
