This article explains how to find out the version of the TLS protocol (from the English "Transport Layer Security", successor to the SSL security protocol) in use on a web server. It also explains how to find the TLS protocol versions supported by your internet browser.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Check the TLS Protocol Version Used by a Website
Step 1. Start the internet browser of your computer, smartphone or tablet
You can perform this checkout procedure using any internet browser, including Chrome, Safari or Firefox.
Step 2. Visit the website
It is a free web service that is able to trace the version of the TLS protocol used by any website on the internet.
Step 3. Enter the domain or IP address of the server to check
Type the required information in the "Hostname" text field located at the top of the page.
If you don't want the tested domain or IP address to appear in the list of recently checked websites, select the "Do not show the results on the boards" checkbox
Step 4. Press or click the Submit button
The indicated website will be examined and, at the end of the check, a summary will be displayed showing the overall level of security of the site.
The checkout procedure usually takes about 3 minutes to complete
Step 5. Scroll down the page to the "Configuration" section
It appears after the "Certificate" section (there may be more than one such section).
Step 6. Locate all versions of the TLS protocol that are marked with "Yes" in the "Protocols" section
All versions of the TLS protocol (both supported and unsupported versions) are listed at the top of the "Configuration" section. Versions marked "Yes" are supported by the website you tested.
Part 2 of 2: Check the TLS Protocol Version Supported by an Internet Browser
Step 1. Launch the internet browser on your computer, smartphone or tablet
You can run this test using any browser, including Chrome, Safari, or Firefox.
Step 2. Visit the website
This is a web service that will perform an automatic test of the browser in use, displaying, at the end, a summary of the results obtained.
Step 3. Find the TLS protocol version number in the "Version" section
Most likely you will have to scroll down the page to find the information you are looking for if you are using a smartphone or tablet.
