One problem with the iPod is that it doesn't open easily. Have you ever had to change the battery? What bad luck. The "only" solutions are to buy a new iPod or have it replaced by Apple, for a fee. Or you can open it, save and learn something about electronics. You might even try building your own media player!
Steps
Step 1. Find out if the iPod is damaged or just needs a new battery
Also, find out how to open the iPod and reach the defective element.
Step 2. Disconnect and completely turn off the iPod
Make sure the “Hold” button is active.
Step 3. Place the iPod with the screen facing down on a soft but sturdy rag
Step 4. Be aware of the model you have and the necessary “strategy”
If you have a first, second or third generation iPod, ClickWheel 4G, iPod photo or Video iPod, you must point the hairdryer towards the rear attachment (the hairdryer is used to dissolve the glue that holds the compartment closed). If you have an iPod Mini, Nano or Shuffle, you need to aim for the top of the compartment.
Step 5. Set the hair dryer to maximum heat
Step 6. Slowly wave the blow dryer over your hand, and if it feels too hot, switch to medium to avoid damaging your iPod
Step 7. Use the most suitable “strategy” to melt the glue
You should point the hairdryer at the iPod for about a minute, and the hairdryer should be about 30cm away from the iPod.
Step 8. Turn off the hair dryer after one minute
Take a butter knife and open the compartment very carefully.
Step 9. Gently lift the side of the iPod, also being careful not to hurt yourself with the knife
Step 10. Admire the electronics of the iPod
Everything seems to be perfectly connected, and every element is in the right place. It is a clear example of a "perfect circuit".
Step 11. Remove the battery, even if it isn't your primary concern
The battery will not shock you, but handle it carefully.
Step 12. Find the problem and fix it, or replace the battery
Step 13. Put everything back in place, and glue the compartment again with strong glue
Step 14. Turn the iPod back on
Have fun!
Step 15. Done
Warnings
- If you're not careful, the butter knife could damage the circuits.
- Do not leave the hairdryer on for more than a minute. Do not even point the hair dryer on the circuits.
- The iPod could break, in case of lack of caution.
- This action cancels the warranty. If you are already out of warranty, you have nothing to lose. You are, however, liable for any resulting damage.
