This article teaches how to adjust Alexa's volume with voice commands and controls on the device itself, such as Amazon Echo and Echo dot. These methods work even when Alexa is playing music, podcasts, or other audio sources.
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Using Voice Commands
Step 1. Activate Alexa by saying "Alexa"
Say the command to wake the device, which will wait for your next command.
The default wake-up command is "Alexa", but if you've changed it to "Echo", "Amazon", or some other word, use the appropriate term
Step 2. Ask Alexa to increase or decrease the volume
In your own words, ask the device to adjust the volume, which will lower or raise it accordingly. For example, you can say Alexa, turn up the volume "or" Alexa, turn down the volume ".
- Alexa understands words like: lower / raise, raise / lower, up / down and louder / softer, so use any terms you like.
- You can make the sentence more conversational, like "Alexa, would you mind turning the volume down for me?". However, just say "Alexa, louder" or "Alexa, slower".
Step 3. Adjust the volume to a specific level between 0 and 10
0 corresponds to mute and 10 to maximum volume. You can ask Alexa to set the audio to the level you prefer.
For example, you can say "Alexa, set the volume to 6", or just "Alexa, volume 6."
Step 4. Ask Alexa to mute the audio
Just say "Alexa, mute" and "Alexa, turn on audio" to mute and turn on the audio. When Alexa turns the sound back on, the previous volume is set.
You can also unmute the audio by asking Alexa to set a specific volume level, such as "Alexa, volume 3."
Part 2 of 4: Using the Hardware Volume Controls
Step 1. Press + or - on newer Echo models to adjust the volume.
The buttons are located at the top of the device.
These models include the second generation Echo and Echo dot, as well as the Echo Show and Echo Spot
Step 2. Rotate the ring to adjust the audio for devices with a volume ring
Above the device, you will notice a ring that you can rotate clockwise to increase the volume and counterclockwise to decrease it. The ring of light will show the current volume in white.
Devices with the volume ring include the first generation Echo and Echo dot, as well as the newer Echo Plus

Its icon is a blue bubble with a white border.
Step 2. Tap the Devices tab

You will be shown the screen with all the settings.
Step 5. Drag the volume slider to change it

To select a custom sound for alarms or notifications, you can also tap the options Alarm or Notification.
Advice
- If your Echo device is connected to loud speakers running, Alexa may not be able to recognize your voice and commands. You may need to use the buttons or the volume ring.
- As you adjust the volume, the current level will appear on the Echo's ring of light, before disappearing again.
- Shorter commands are the best. While you can say what you like and Alexa will change the volume anyway, remember that short commands generate fewer errors.
- If you're always having trouble adjusting the volume with voice controls, you may need to reposition your device. Try to get it closer to the point where you use the controls most often, or move furniture and obstructing objects, especially if they are very close to the device or cover it.
