Learn to take care of your leotard by washing it properly at home, saving money on laundry and making it last longer.
Steps
Step 1. Keep the labels on the garment
Follow the washing instructions, which may differ from the steps in this article.
Store your labels in digital form so you can find them quickly when you need them. Scan them or take a picture with your phone
Step 2. Check for spots or marks on the bodysuit
Underwear leotards usually get soiled with sweat and rarely get stained. However, before putting it in the laundry hamper, check for stains and pre-treat it with a suitable product or mild detergent.
Step 3. Decide whether to hand wash or not
Some models of leotards can be washed in the washing machine; however, it is always advisable to wash them by hand so as not to damage the fabric. In addition, frequent washing can damage any metal inserts or other decorations.
- Never put artistic gymnastics leotards in the washing machine! They are very expensive and delicate, so always wash them by hand.
- Black and white patterned (or light and dark patterned) leotards should always be hand washed to prevent the dark color from transferring to the light areas.
Method 1 of 2: Machine Wash
Step 1. Turn the leotard inside out
To damage the fabric, decorations and inserts as little as possible, it is very important to wash the garment inside out for both hand and machine washes.
Step 2. Wash your leotards thoroughly every day
If you decide to use the washing machine, set a wash cycle for delicates using a lot of water and without putting too many items in the drum. After washing, immediately remove the leotard from the washing machine.
Method 2 of 2: Hand Wash
Again, it is advisable to wash the leotard inside out.
Step 1. Wash the leotard in cold water with a mild cleanser
Prepare the water and detergent by following the instructions on the package. Use plenty of water to completely submerge your body.
Step 2. Put the soapy water on the fabric and leave it for a couple of minutes
Unless there is a stain to treat, do not rub the fabric of the leotard.
Step 3. Rinse with fresh water
Gently squeeze the fabric to completely remove the detergent and not twist the leotard. Dab with a towel to remove excess water.
Advice
- Avoid storing your leotards in drawers or backpack, but hang them separately to prevent them from coming into contact with creams, lotions, etc.
- If you wear a leotard for artistic gymnastics, change immediately after training to avoid getting it dirty.
-
Hang the leotard or lay it out on a flat surface to dry. If you hang it outside the house, be careful not to leave it in direct contact with sunlight; indoors, lay away from windows or ventilation ducts. If necessary, you can use the dryer, but set it to low temperatures.
Warnings
- Patterned leotards must be laid out carefully to avoid color transfer. Hang them so that the darker area is at the bottom to prevent it from dripping onto the light area.
- Do not iron the leotard; once worn, the stretch fabric will adapt to your body and no creases will be seen.
- Don't twist the leotard; pat it dry with a towel.
- Never use bleach to avoid damaging the elastic properties of the fabric.
- Do not put the leotard in the dryer at high temperatures to avoid damaging the decorations or the elastics.
