Step 1. Shampoo 24-48 hours before dyeing

You will allow the sebum to spread on the hair so that the color can set more easily. The dye will combine more naturally with your hair and last longer.

  • If you can, the day before you dye your hair, avoid using conditioner when you wash it, otherwise it will remove the sebum that the color needs to adhere more easily.
  • If you have very dry hair, use the conditioner every night and leave it on for at least 5 minutes in a hot shower for a week before dyeing your hair. Stop using it the night before dyeing. By doing this, you will prevent them from dehydrating after coloring them.

Step 2. Choose the color you prefer

It is easy to be impressed by the hundreds of shades that can be achieved. If this is your first time dyeing your hair, it is best to choose a color that is two shades darker or lighter than your natural hair.

  • If you are a beginner you can also try coloring them first with a temporary or semi-permanent dye. By using either, you can be sure that if you make a mistake, you won't have to live with your mistake for long. Keep in mind that you apply the semi-permanent dye to damp hair.
  • The temporary dye usually lasts up to 6-12 washes, while the semi-permanent one up to 20-26 washes. Permanent color usually lasts for 6-8 weeks, but can sometimes last longer.

Step 3. Protect yourself and your home from dye stains

When you dye your hair you certainly don't want to leave weird cherry red stains all over the carpet and on your favorite shirt. Then, cover any surfaces that might get dirty around your station and spread a few sheets of newspaper on the floor. Keep some paper towels handy in case you spill some dye. Wear an old shirt that you don't like, preferably one that you would like to throw away. In these circumstances it is very easy to stain the worn shirt with dye.

Step 4. Put a towel or hairdressing cape around your shoulders

It will catch any drop of color that falls from the hair while applying the dye. You can buy a cape for hairdressers in perfumery or online. If you decide to use a towel, choose one that is dark in color, to prevent any stains from being visible on the sponge. Secure the towel at the front of the neck with a safety pin or clothespin.

Step 5. Brush your hair well

Make sure there are no knots. This step will make it easier for you to apply the dye, but it will also help you color the entire hair evenly.

Step 6. Protect the hairline, ears and neck before applying the dye

You can use petroleum jelly, a moisturizer, cocoa butter, or conditioner from the kit (if you find it inside). This step is optional, but applying this protection will make it easier for you to get rid of color spots on your skin.

Step 7. Put on a pair of gloves

They are usually included in the dye package. If not, you can simply use normal rubber or latex gloves. Remember that they are a very important tool when dyeing your hair. If you don't wear them, you will end up staining your hands as well.

Step 8. Use a bottle or bowl to mix the color

Follow the instructions provided in the package. Most hair dye kits include a bottle that you can use to mix the color. Follow the instructions explaining how to combine the dyes inside this bottle. Then shake the solution until they are well mixed. If the package does not contain these tools, you will need to purchase a bowl in which to mix the color.

If the kit does not come with a brush, you can buy one at the perfumery or simply use your fingers, protected by gloves, to apply the dye

Step 9. Mix the dye with oxygen

This step is only valid for some tinctures: carefully follow the instructions of the product you have purchased and, in case it is necessary to use oxygen, the relative instructions will be shown on the package. Typically, the latter is included in the package. If not, you can buy it at hairdressing supply stores.

If you need to buy oxygen for dyes, choose one at 20%

Part 2 of 3: Dyeing the Hair

Step 1. Use a comb to divide your hair into four sections

Use clothespins (which you can buy at the grocery store) to keep them separate. Parting your hair this way will make sure you don't miss any strands.

Step 2. Apply the dye to the sectioned hair

As you work, separate each section of hair into smaller strands of 0.5 to 1cm (this will make the application more even). Use the applicator bottle or a brush to spread the color on your hair. Distribute it with your fingers, always protected by gloves. Where to start applying the dye depends on your hair, whether it is natural or already dyed.

  • If this is your first time dyeing them, start applying the color about 2-3 cm from the root.
  • If it's a touch-up, start about 1cm from the root.
  • Spread the dye well along your hair so you don't just color the top layers of your hair.

Step 3. Use a timer by setting the shutter speed

Follow the instructions on the package. Do not proceed with rinsing before the minimum time has elapsed and do not leave the color on for longer than the maximum time. Make sure you follow the instructions exactly. If you have a lot of gray hair, it is best to leave the dye on until the minutes indicated in the instructions have passed.

Never leave the dye on overnight. By doing so, you run the risk of drying out your hair and severe skin irritation can arise

Part 3 of 3: Rinse the Hair

Step 1. Remove excess color from neck and forehead with a paper towel or damp cloth

Do not touch the dye laying on the hair. If you prefer, you can wear a shower cap so you don't stain anywhere.

Once you have put on the cap, you can wrap your head in a towel so that the cap underneath retains the heat. In this way you will speed up the laying times of the dye

Step 2. Wait until the processing times have finished and rinse your hair

Once the time has passed, step into the shower or use the sink to wash your hair. Use cold water to get the dye out of your hair. Wash them until the running water is clear.

Don't be impressed if you see the color go down in the shower. This is completely normal and does not mean that you have missed a few steps. Keep in mind that if the dye is temporary, the color will continue to drip each time you shampoo until it fades completely

Step 3. Shampoo and conditioner

Wait at least an hour before washing your hair. In the meantime, you will allow the color to penetrate deeper into the hair shaft. After washing your hair, use the conditioner you find in the package. Massage your entire head thoroughly.

Most kits come with conditioner, but if yours doesn't, you can just use what you have at home

Step 4. Dry your hair and style it as usual

You can use the hair dryer or let them air dry. Once dry, style them as you normally do and flaunt your new hair color! If you are not satisfied with the results, you can contact a hairdresser to change the color. It would be a good idea to wait at least 2 weeks before dyeing them again.

Advice

  • If you are using permanent dye for an event or holiday and want your hair to look natural and healthy, dye it at least a week in advance. This will give your hair and scalp time to look more natural after a couple of applications of shampoo and conditioner. Often, freshly dyed hair does not give this impression, but after a week you will no longer notice any difference.
  • Buy products designed specifically for the protection of dyed hair. They contain less aggressive substances and make the color last longer.
  • Do not rinse with hot water, otherwise the color will fade faster.

Warnings

  • Some tinctures contain a chemical called p-phenylenediamine which can cause allergic reactions in some people. If the product you intend to use contains this ingredient, it is best to test a small portion of the skin before applying it to the hair. Put some behind your ear or in the crease of your arm, let it sit for about 20 minutes, then rinse it off and wait at least 24 hours to see if an allergic reaction sets in.
  • If you feel burning or itching while the dye is on, wash it off immediately.
  • Never try to dye eyelashes or brows. You could severely damage your eyes or even lose your sight.
