Do your children love fairies? So why not create some fairy dust to entertain them? You can make some fairy dust to sprinkle in the garden or even edible fairy dust to sweeten and color your meals. Use one of the methods below to add a touch of magic and sparkles to a children's day.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Fairy Dust to Spread Outside the Home
Step 1. Prepare what you need
To make fairy dust to sprinkle outside your home, you will need some glitter in your favorite color and some non-toxic powder. For the powder you can use talcum powder, colored chalks to crush or salt.
- Also get a fun container, such as a decorative bottle, to store the fairy dust. Whichever container you choose, it is advisable to use one with a solid lid.
- The amount of glitter and powder you will need depends on the amount of fairy dust you want to make. In general, the aspect ratio is 2 (glitter) to 1 (powder).
- Any type of sequin will work for this method, however, very fine sequins will produce better fairy dust.
Step 2. Mix the glitter and powder in a bowl
Mix the ingredients until they are completely combined.
Step 3. Put the fairy dust in a bottle or container
Make sure you close it carefully to prevent its contents from accidentally spilling around the house.
To pour the fairy dust into the container (based on the size of its opening) it may be useful to use a funnel. If you don't have one available, roll a small piece of paper into a funnel shape and tape it to keep it in shape. Cut the tip of the cone with scissors, making sure it fits into the container
Step 4. Give the children fairy dust
Make sure they play outside as the fairy dust will get a lot dirty. Many children also like to just throw dust in the air and watch it shine as it falls to the ground!
Don't let the kids eat the fairy dust! It is not edible and could cause problems if ingested
Method 2 of 2: Edible Fairy Dust
Step 1. Prepare what you need
To make edible fairy powder, all you need is sugar and food coloring. Decide how much fairy dust to make to determine how much sugar to use. If this is your first time, try this method with a glass of sugar.
- Also prepare a bowl to mix the powder, a pan to cook it, and a container to store it.
- It may be a good idea to put the fairy dust in a salt shaker or sugar bowl with a dispenser so you can sprinkle it on your food. Dispenser sugar bowls are available at many home and kitchen supply stores.
Step 2. Mix the sugar and food coloring in a bowl
The proportions of sugar and dye depend on the amount of fairy dust you are preparing. Start by adding a few drops of sugar coloring and stir until the color is evenly blended.
When you get the color you like best, stop adding the dye. If, on the other hand, you want a more intense alcohol content, pour a few more drops and continue mixing. You can add the dye gradually until you get a bright tint
Step 3. Pour the colored sugar into a pan and place it in the preheated oven at 180 ° C
Let it cook for about 10 minutes.
The sugar is cooked to fix the color. Essentially, the heat of the oven dries the food coloring making the sugar more compact and dyeing it permanently
Step 4. Remove the sugar from the oven and let it cool to room temperature
Once cooled, crush the sugar if it has melted.
To crush it, put the sugar in a sturdy plastic bag and hit it with a meat mallet or other heavy kitchen tool, such as a rolling pin
Step 5. Put the sugar in a container, such as a salt shaker or a sugar bowl with a measuring cup
The sugar "fairy dust" will last a long time, as it is simply sugar coated with food coloring. You can store it in the kitchen cabinet at room temperature.
Step 6. Sprinkle "fairy dust" on your children's favorite food
Fairy dust will make any meal more colorful and magical.
