Create a custom entrance mat using a standard sisal and transform it to your style. You will need nothing more than ordinary wall paint and a brush to paint your design, which you only need to design and sketch before applying the color.
Steps
Step 1. Remove all damaged strands from the sisal carpet
Before applying the paint, make sure that all fragments have been removed from the surface, to avoid compromising the design. If you are unable to remove them completely by brushing gently (do not tear the strands as you could ruin the mat), use a pair of scissors to remove the frayed links.
Beat the carpet to make sure you remove all loose strands. Run your hand over the surface of the fabric to soften it
Step 2. Trace your design
Whether you want to draw freehand or have a specific design in mind, plan your project before you lay the color on the carpet.
-
Make a sketch for your freehand drawing. Use the pencil to create a guideline to follow with the brush. This sketch will also allow you to have a preview of the design and to make any changes.
- Use a stencil for a well-structured design. Download images or shapes from the internet, or create them yourself. You can use plain paper or transfer the pattern to thicker card stock, which makes it easier to draw.
Step 3. Color the design on the carpet
Using the guidelines drawn in pencil, apply the color to the mat. When working on textured fabric, you may be tempted to add too much color at a time (to fill in hollows and bumps). Resist the temptation! Doing so will only ruin the drawing and cause a mess. Instead dip the brush in the paint, using it in small amounts. Then brush several times and add a little at a time, until the entire area is covered.
-
Use the paper tape to protect the rest of the mat or to create the design. It is very simple to use and is easily removed from all surfaces.
-
Consider applying a coat of color, allowing it to dry completely, and then applying another.
-
If possible, when you're done, use Scotchgard or some other type of fabric protector to preserve your design.
Advice
- Carefully erase any pencil lines that are still visible.
- Use brushes of different sizes to best complement your drawing.
