Easter is a fun time of year for children. There's nothing quite like making an old-fashioned Easter basket by hand to start celebrating. This is a simple and very traditional Easter project. Here's how to get started!

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Making the Basket

Step 1. Organize a workspace and put together the materials you will use

While your basket will be complemented by items of your choice, maybe you could start with some of these things:

  • Basket / Box
  • Cellophane grass or paper
  • Glue
  • Pencils or markers
  • Scissors
  • Adhesives
  • Candies
  • Plastic eggs
  • Small toys

Step 2. Cut a piece of paper to wrap around the box

Pick up the paper by holding it close to the box and make a mark with a pencil (or pen) to show how much of it needs to be cut to cover the box. Cut the paper and glue it to the box. Easter colors are usually pastel colors: light yellow, pink, blue, green and purple.

A regular wicker basket will do just fine. If you don't have one lying around your house, you can easily find them in many different stores: things for the home, 99 cent shops or craft shops should have everything you need

Step 3. Draw and cut out some Easter eggs on the paper

Use pencils or markers to decorate them and set them aside. Then take the rest of the paper to make a handle. Make sure the handle is long enough; it is better that it is longer than too short, in fact you can always cut off a piece. Set it aside.

A paper handle is certainly not the strongest thing. So, if you have a heavy basket, it is best to carry it by holding it by the base and not by the handle. The handle is decorative only

Step 4. Glue the eggs to the side of the box

Add decorative stickers if you want, with designs like the Easter bunny, chicks, candy, bows, etc. If you don't want to do the drawings by hand, print copies from the internet or get some old coloring books.

If you are a creative person, don't stop! You can add bows to your basket of decorations in quilling, fabric or whatever your imagination suggests

Step 5. Glue the handle inside the box

Glue one side at a time and make sure the ends are at the same height. You could also opt for a stapler - just be careful to put a small decoration on the staple because it does not notice.

Method 2 of 2: Fill the Basket

Step 1. Fill it with grass

The first step to a traditional Easter basket is grass, which can be either cellophane (which now exists in different colors) or homemade paper.

An alternative to Easter grass could be bows of fabric, straw or ribbons. Anything that can serve as a stuffing for the basket will do

Step 2. Add the candies

After all, what is Easter without sweets for a child? Typical Easter products are eggs and chocolate bunnies, Easter doves and many other delicacies that recall the protagonists of Easter in their shape.

Don't forget your child's favorite dessert! Whether it's Easter or not, be sure to add something your child enjoys year-round

Step 3. Add the plastic eggs and small toys

April and fill them with candy and little trinkets. Then, between the candies, put some sweets so it takes more than a few bites to finish them. Here are some ideas:

  • Things to color
  • Pongo or similar
  • Dolls / figurines
  • Playing cards
  • DVD
  • Bubbles
  • Temporary tattoos

Step 4. Arrange it aesthetically and hide it somewhere in the house

If you're going to use your kids' painted eggs, remember to take them out of the fridge just before they find the basket. You certainly don't want them to stink!

If it's a nice day it could be part of an Easter treasure hunt - once they've found all the eggs inside, they can go out to look for the real treasure

Advice

  • If you are making the basket for a child, you can customize the box with characters from his favorite cartoon. Make sure you ask in advance which program you are following most passionately.
  • Before wrapping the box with wrapping paper, sprinkle it with glue; smooth it well evenly and then sprinkle the other objects that will be coated with paper, such as the eggs and the handle.
  • If you have a paper shredder you can use it to make Easter grass by putting colored wrapping paper in it. This is definitely the best type of grass for both children and animals; better than cellophane weed sold in stores. For dogs and cats it can be fatal to ingest it.
  • When you put the Easter grass in the box, make sure it sticks out a little to make the basket more attractive.

Warnings

  • Don't use too much glue; the beauty of the basket will be seen and diminished.
  • The handle is primarily for aesthetic purposes. Unless the basket is filled with light objects and candy, do not carry it by holding it by the handle.
