While it may not be as flashy as its Xbox 360 and PS3 cousins, FIFA on the Wii is still a beautiful, element-packed gaming experience. As with all versions of FIFA, it's more fun if you're playing with your friends. And what better way to play with friends than to beat them with goals! Follow this guide to master the basics of FIFA.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Starting a Game
Step 1. Choose the game mode
When you start FIFA on the Wii, you will be presented with different modes. If you just want to start a quick match, select "Hit the Pitch". This will start a normal quick match where you can choose your team and opponent. Other modes include:
-
Cup - allows you to choose a team and participate in a tournament, earning rewards.
-
Play on the street - a 5v5 street match will start.
-
From the street to the stadium - allows you to create a player and follow his career, improving your stats.
-
Manager - this mode allows you to manage a team, take care of the transfer market and train your players.
-
Tournament - offers you a variety of tournaments where you can test your skills.
Step 2. Choose between Professional or Classic mode
Before starting a game, you will be able to choose between these two modes. The Professional mode will allow you to control a single player for the entire match, while the Classic mode gives you the command of the whole team, managing the man in possession of the ball.
Step 3. Choose the type of controls
Once you have selected the game mode, you will be able to choose between All-Play or Advanced controls. All-Play mode makes use of simplified controls and AI assistance to help novice players enjoy the game without having to learn all the nuances of the control system. Advanced controls give you total control over your player's movements and actions.
-
Press "1" or "L" to change the control scheme on the Select Team screen.
Step 4. Choose your team
When you have chosen the mode and controls, you will see the teams you can choose from. Use the arrow icons to browse categories such as Recent and Most Used. Each team has a rating that indicates the effectiveness in the different phases of the game. These ratings are on a scale of 1 to 100.
Step 5. Edit the game settings
Before the game starts, you can change some basic settings, such as duration, game type, difficulty and stage.
Step 6. Select your Quick Tactics
If you are using Advanced Controls, you can issue orders to your squad with Quick Tactics. You can assign four different tactics to the controller buttons. Use the Advanced Controls menu to choose which tactics you use.
-
Watch the preview window to see how the tactic will be performed in the field.
-
Quick tactics are not available for All-Play controls.
Part 2 of 3: Playing Attack
Step 1. Get moving
When you have possession of the ball, moving the lever of your nunchuck will make your player move on the field. You will always control the player in possession of the ball. If you need to run faster, you can use the Z button to sprint. But the shot will make you tired in seconds.
Step 2. Pass the ball
Direct your player to the teammate you want to pass the ball to using the lever and press the A Button to make a low pass. If you press and hold the A button, you will make a pass, lifting the ball above the opponents' heads and making it go much further.
-
Holding the C button as you pass will allow you to make a through ball. This is a very useful pass especially on the counterattack, because it allows you to increase your speed and distance your opponents.
-
For all-play controls, only one switch key (A) is available, while the computer takes care of the rest.
Step 3. Come by often
If you make a player hold the ball too long, it will be easier for it to be stolen. Passing the ball forces defenders to keep chasing you and allows you to control the pace of the match.
-
The triangle is one of the most effective techniques in football. Passing the ball to a player and then returning it to the first who sprints forward will allow you to evade the defense and control the pitch.
Step 4. Shoot
The shot works almost like the pass. Direct your player towards the opponents' goal and press or hold the B Button. The longer you press, the more powerful the shot will be.
-
Holding the C button will allow you to lob.
-
For All-Play controls, there is only one shot control (B), while the computer will take care of the rest.
Step 5. Try dribbling
Pressing different directions on the Wiimote's directional pad will allow you to play different ball games. They are great numbers to show off, but they can also be effective fakes.
Step 6. Change tactics on the fly
Press the C Button and a direction on the Wiimote's D-Pad to call a quick tactic for your team. Players will try to follow the tactic assigned to the button. You can use tactics to try to score, defend yourself, or for many other game situations.
Part 3 of 3: Playing Defense
Step 1. Change Player
When defending, you can switch players to control on the pitch to better defend your goal. Pressing Button A or the directional pad will allow you to control the player closest to the ball. This will allow you to always be close to the action. Make sure you change players as soon as your opponents leave your side of the pitch!
Step 2. Attack your opponent
One of the best ways to wrest control of the ball from your opponents is to enter the fray and steal the ball. Holding the B button will allow you to perform an automatic tackle, while shaking the Wiimote will allow you to slide in the direction of your run.
-
To successfully perform a tackle, always try to intervene towards the ball and not towards the player. If you hit the player, you may receive a yellow card.
Step 3. Switch to hard play
Use the positioning function to get close to an opponent and take advantage of the position. This technique is useful for fighting headers and intercepting passes, and thanks to it you can recover many balls. You can do this by holding down the C button.
-
There is no positioning command for All-Play controls.
Step 4. Ask for help from peers
The Double down feature will allow you to get the closest AI controlled player close to the ball to completely close your opponent. Press and hold the A button to call a double. One way to use this feature is to call a teammate to press and then use the player in your control to intercept any passes.
