In Windows, you can use a second screen to extend the surface of your desktop. To do this, your desktop computer must have two VGA ports. Most laptops are equipped with a VGA port. This method is very useful for increasing the size of your desktop in order to be able to work on multiple applications at the same time, such as a text document and a spreadsheet.
Steps
Step 1. Connect the second monitor to the free VGA port on your computer
Step 2. Select an empty area of the desktop with the right mouse button, then select Properties from the context menu that appeared
Within the Properties window that appeared, select the Settings tab.
- As shown in the image, the two numbered squares represent the two monitors.
- The primary monitor is labeled with the number 1 and the secondary display with the number 2. The primary monitor (1) is selected by default.
Step 3. Select the external monitor number 2, then select the check button "Extend my desktop to this monitor" and then press the OK button
Step 4. Make sure the new settings have been applied correctly
Your primary monitor should look as it always has, while the secondary monitor should display your desktop with no icons and no taskbar.
Advice
- Application windows can be moved from one screen to another and vice versa by simply dragging them, just as you normally move them on your desktop.
- The second screen can be a projector, monitor or television.
- You can move the mouse pointer from normal desktop to extended desktop by simply moving it to the edge of a monitor.
