Does your skin tend to be dry and rough, especially in the coldest months of the year? Babies have naturally soft skin, but the years put a strain on it. Learn techniques, products and treatments you can try to have silky smooth skin again.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Exfoliation Techniques
Step 1. Try brushing on dry skin
The skin usually starts to feel rough and dull as dead cells build up. The air dries up the outermost layer of the skin and makes it flake, making the texture less uniform. Brushing these dead cells immediately makes the skin softer, and since this technique improves circulation, the softness of your skin will also increase over time.
- Brushes can be found in perfumery or supermarkets. Buy one made of natural fibers. They are gentler on the skin, so avoid those with plastic bristles.
- Make sure your skin and brush are completely dry when you start. Start from the feet, go up from the legs towards the heart making quick and decisive movements. Focus on the areas where the skin is at its driest. Continue until you have brushed your entire body. This should take about five minutes.
- If you want to brush your face, buy a special brush with softer bristles.
Step 2. Use an exfoliating scrub
Scrubs are usually made with salt or sugar and lotions that moisturize the skin during the exfoliation process. While in the shower or tub, apply a dab of scrub to the area you want to exfoliate and massage it firmly into the skin. The sugar or salt will remove dead skin cells without scratching or damaging the skin.
- For best results, use the scrub a couple of times a week. Don't use it too often or you will dry out the skin; the scrub removes dead cells and dirt, but it can also absorb the skin's natural oils that prevent it from drying out too much.
-
You can buy one at the supermarket or perfumery, but it's easy to make it yourself. Combine the following ingredients and store the scrub in an old cosmetic jar or container with a lid:
- 450 gr of granulated sugar or fine salt;
- 125 ml of olive or almond oil;
- 60 ml of Honey
- 1 teaspoon of Vanilla or a few drops of your favorite essential oil.
Step 3. Shave regularly
If you want smooth, silky legs, razor or wax will help. Not only will you remove the hair, which makes the legs bristly, but you will also remove the dead cells that accumulate on the surface of the skin.
- Shave your legs with a special hair removal cream so your skin doesn't dry out.
- Choose a wax that has moisturizing ingredients, such as aloe vera, for an even smoother result.
Method 2 of 3: Hydration Methods
Step 1. Use a moisturizer every day
Protecting the skin from the elements with a layer of moisturizer is the best way to keep it smooth and silky. Choose a cream especially for dry skin. Apply it as soon as you get out of the shower, with the skin still moist and warm, so that all the nutrients are absorbed and thus obtain a soft skin.
- Always carry a bottle of cream with you to apply throughout the day to areas that tend to dry out, such as face and hands.
- A sunscreen moisturizer is perfect for your face, because it keeps your skin hydrated and protects you from the sun at the same time.
Step 2. Do some moisturizing treatments
When the cream isn't enough to keep the skin soft, it's time for an oil-based moisturizer. The procedure might be a bit complicated, but it's worth it for silky skin. Do these steps before bedtime:
- Massage the oil all over the body. Use olive, almond, jojoba, or another cosmetic oil. You can find them in the supermarket, herbalist's shop or perfumery.
- Put on long-sleeved pajamas. In this way you will not dirty the bed and the oil will remain on the skin. Choose pajamas made from cotton rather than silk or other fabric that could get stained with oil. If you want, also wear socks and gloves.
- In the morning, take a shower and apply your usual moisturizer. The skin should be super soft, like a baby's.
Step 3. Try different moisturizers
Not all are suitable for all skin types. Maybe commercial creams for dry skin won't stop yours from drying out after a few hours. Try these natural moisturizers while looking for the cream that will make your skin silky:
- Coconut oil is easy to spread and melts on the skin.
- Shea butter is perfect for rough knees and heels, especially in winter.
- Lanolin is the natural substance that sheep produce to keep their wool soft and waterproof.
- Aloe vera is a perfect daily moisturizer, which does not leave the skin greasy.
Method 3 of 3: Spa Treatments
Step 1. Make yourself a mask
Masks are used on the face and body to smooth and exfoliate the skin. Buy it at the supermarket, or make one with ingredients you already have in the kitchen.
- Milk Mask. After your shower, dip a cotton ball into warm milk. Wipe it on your face and let the milk dry. Once it has been completely absorbed into the skin, wash your face with cold water to close the pores. You can also add milk to bath water to soften the whole body.
- Honey and Lemon Mask. Put 2 tablespoons of flour in a bowl. Add 2 of honey and a teaspoon of lemon juice. Mix everything and apply the mixture on the face or on another part of the body. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash it off with cold water.
- Oat flakes bath. Oats have soothing and healing properties and letting the oat water be absorbed during the bath is a great way to get softer skin. You may not like the idea of bathing in oat flakes, but there are simpler ways to enjoy its benefits:
Step 2. Pour a cup of classic oat flakes into an old shirt and tie it up
A tea towel is also fine.
Step 3. Fill the tub with lukewarm (not hot) water and place the oat bundle
-
While taking a bath, squeeze the bundle of oats by passing it over your body. Focus on the driest or most irritated areas.
-
Try a seaweed wrap. This spa treatment is specially designed to improve skin tone. Buy a packet of unsalted seaweed. Fill a large bowl with cold water and submerge the seaweed. Put on a towel and apply the seaweed to the body. Let them dry until they start to curl and then take them off. Rinse the skin and apply the moisturizer.
