Keeping your eyelids clean helps prevent bacteria from proliferating and decreases the chances of getting blepharitis. You can keep them clean by washing them every day with a mild detergent solution. You should also remove make-up properly at the end of the day, if you have a habit of wearing make-up. Whenever you wash your eyelids, be sure to proceed gently to avoid damaging this delicate area of the body.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Wash the Lids with a Cleansing Solution
Step 1. Wash your hands before touching the eye area
By washing your hands you will make sure they are clean and ready to come into contact with the delicate eye area. So wash them using warm water and antibacterial soap before touching your eyes.
Step 2. Make a cleansing solution of warm water and a mild baby shampoo
Fill a glass with 60-90ml of warm water. Add 3 drops of baby shampoo. Mix the ingredients well with a spoon.
Don't feel like making a cleaning solution? Look for a specific eyelid cleanser at the pharmacy, such as Blephasol or Blephagel
Step 3. Massage the solution into your eyelids using a cotton ball
Keep your eyes closed to avoid irritating them. Gently massage the cotton ball back and forth on each eyelid for 15-30 seconds.
If you don't have cotton balls, you can use a lint-free sponge, cloth, or gauze pad
Step 4. Use a cotton swab to remove any residue left on the eyelids
Soak a cotton swab in the solution, then gently massage it onto the surface of the eyelids. Spend 30 seconds on each eyelid, making sure you also clean the lash line and the lid margin.
- Use a different cotton swab for each eye.
- Use a magnifying mirror for this step so that you can see any residue left on the eyelids.
Step 5. Rinse your eyelids with cold water
Lower your face to the sink and rinse your eyelids with cold water using your hands. Once the solution is completely removed, pat it dry with a towel.
Method 2 of 2: Remove Eyelids
Step 1. If you use water-resistant makeup, choose an oily-based makeup remover
This type of product facilitates the removal of makeup, so as to avoid rubbing the eyelids. If you don't use water-resistant cosmetics, any eye make-up remover will do.
Oil-based make-up removers are available in perfumery or on the internet
Step 2. Apply the eye makeup remover to the eyelids using a cotton pad
Let it act for 10 seconds: in this way the product will have all the time necessary to dissolve the make-up, facilitating its removal.
- To save time, look for cotton pads pre-soaked in eye makeup remover.
- Use a different disc for each eye.
Step 3. Gently move the disk from the inner corner of the eye to the outer one
Do not rub it or make any aggressive movements, otherwise you risk tearing the eyelashes and damaging the skin around the eyes. It is enough to gently pass it on the surface of the mobile eyelids.
Step 4. Wipe the cotton pad over your eyelids to remove any remaining makeup residue
Starting from the inner corner of the eye, proceed to the outer one. Gently swipe it on both the upper and lower eyelids. Avoid rubbing it, so as not to damage the skin around the eyes.
Step 5. Remove any remaining makeup remover residue with a facial cleanser
Moisten the skin and gently apply the product with your hands. Gently massage it into your mobile eyelids to remove all makeup remover residues.
Advice
Try not to touch the area around the eyes, unless you need to wash it or apply cosmetics
Warnings
- If you experience severe itching or pain in the area around the eyes after washing, you should see an ophthalmologist.
- If the eye has pus or other secretions, or a thick green or yellow crust develops, it is possible that you have contracted an infection. See your ophthalmologist or go to the emergency room to get a prescription for treatment.
