No matter the economic value of your bike, the day will come when you need to repair or replace the chain. The structure of a mountain bike makes this operation a little more complex than a normal bicycle, but the process is the same. Once you understand how a bike chain works, you will also learn how to change it.
Steps
Step 1. Purchase a chain tool
The links of the chains are connected to each other with small pins, and this tool is used to extract them. Some models are able to work on multiple meshes of all sizes, while others are more specific. Most mountain bikes have standard-sized link chains, but check before purchasing the tool.

If you do not have the chain tool and are unable to get it, you will have to work with normal tools available in the house to extract the pins. However, this is not recommended as you could inadvertently destroy or damage the chain.

Step 2. Clean the chain before removing it
It will be greased to ensure it flows smoothly between shifts. When you ride the bike, dust and dirt tend to accumulate on the chain sticking to the grease, especially on MTBs. Just moisten a rag with a specific degreaser and rub it on the chain. Rotate the pedals with your free hand to make sure you clean the entire length of the chain.
Step 3. Remove the pin from a link
Insert the chain tool making sure that the tool channel fits the support. Rotate the handle of the chain tool until the pin comes out completely on the other side.

Some chains have a connector that is stronger than a regular pin and also looks different. Do not try to disassemble a link with the connector or an adjacent one, you risk damaging the chain or compromising its strength.

Step 4. Note the exact path of the chain before disassembling it
You will need to reposition the new one in the exact same way.
Step 5. Slip the replacement chain inside the bike transmission mechanism and connect it
As for a normal chain, you just have to close the two ends together by sliding the pin inside. However, it is advisable to check the instruction manual of the bike or those on the packaging of the spare part.
Step 6. Take a test
Rotate the pedals manually to check that the chain runs smoothly between the shifters and the front derailleur. Make sure no mesh is stiff; this can usually occur due to the pins protruding from their seat, in this case they must be fixed with the chain tool.
