This article assumes that the violin is already built and that the bridge is properly suited for the instrument. Follow these steps to place the bridge on your violin.

Steps

Step 1. Check that the core is in the right position, then put two strings (the highest and the lowest, E and G) on the instrument leaving them loose

Or put all four strings on and leave them loose, then lay the jumper under the strings and holding the feet raise it. The optimal distance from the nut is 33.5 cm. The soul does not have a "right" position, it depends on the sound you want: it tends to be under the right "f" between the bridge and the "f" itself.

Step 2. Place the jumper

  • The bridge should be centered horizontally on the instrument so that there is an equal gap between each string and the end of the fingerboard.
  • The bridge must also be between the small cuts in the inner part of the "f" (from the hedgehog to the tailpiece), aligned with the centerline of the strings.
  • The lower part of the bridge must be used to support the E string, the higher one for the G string.

Step 4. Apply light pressure on the strings and make sure the bridge is in an upright position

The bridge should bend slightly towards the tailpiece (the bridge must be perpendicular to the soundbox and not bent).

If you have any doubts about the placement of the jumper, look at the thin side of this piece. The side closest to the tailpiece should be perpendicular to the violin table, while the side facing the fingerboard should be slightly inclined

Advice

Don't move the tool too much or the core will fall out and need professional repair. It is preferable to have the supervision of an instructor if possible

Warnings

  • If the core is not custom made for that instrument, the pressure exerted by the bridge will cause the instrument to break.
  • In most situations, you should never attempt to remove, replace, or try to move the jumper without having proper training.
  • If your jumper fell to the ground during practice and you are not a pro, don't try to put it back on. You can break the tool very easily.
