Sharing your digital library with other people is an easy way to get more books to read. For some time now it has been possible to do this directly from your Kindle. A friend's e-mail address is enough to allow him to access one of your most interesting books. He doesn't even need to have a Kindle to enjoy the content you've shared with him, because there is a reading app that you can download for free. You can also create a family library where you can gather the accounts of close relatives and create a large collection of books.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Lending a Book
Step 1. Log in to Amazon.com
Visit www.amazon.com/mycd to find the "My Content and Devices" page. Click on the "My Content" tab. You should see all the books you have downloaded to your Kindle.
Step 2. Choose a book
Click the "Select" box next to the book you want to lend to a friend, then the "Actions" box to open a small menu of choices. Choose "Lend this title".
If you don't see "Lend this title" as an option, the book you have chosen cannot be checked out
Step 3. Enter your friend's email address
After clicking on "Lend this title", a form will open where you have to enter your friend's information. Enter your e-mail and name, then, if you wish to add a message, write it in the appropriate field before pressing the "Send" button.
Step 4. Ask your friend to check their email
He has seven days to accept the book you lent him and fourteen days to read it. After this deadline, the book will return to your digital library.
Until the book is returned, you cannot access it
Method 2 of 2: Create a Family Library
Step 1. Create an Amazon Household (not yet available in Italy)
You must participate in this service to create a Family Library. An Amazon Household can include up to two adults with their Amazon accounts and up to four children with special profiles, created as part of those of adults.
- Go to "Manage accounts and devices" on www.amazon.com/mycd;
- Click on the "Settings" tab;
- Select "Invite Adult" in the "Households and Family Library" tab;
- Ask the second adult who is to participate to log into their Amazon account;
- Once logged in, select "Yes" to share Amazon's payment methods, content, services and profile management for your children;
- Click on "Create Household";
- When asked to set up content sharing through Family Library, click "Yes".
Step 2. Visit the "Manage Accounts and Devices" page
Click on the "Your Content" tab.
Step 3. Select the content you want to share
Click "Select" next to the book you want to share. Click on "Add to Library".
If you don't see "Add to Library", select the "Show Family Library" tab
Step 4. Choose which profile to add content to
Select that of an adult or a child and click on "Ok".
Advice
- Your friend doesn't need a Kindle to read the book you lent him. He can download the Kindle reading app for free on his favorite device to access the title.
- Look for books that can be loaned out when you buy new ones. On the product details page, you will be told if the book can be shared.
- Send the e-mail to your friend's personal e-mail address so they will surely receive the message. In some cases, your personal address does not match that of your Kindle.
Warnings
- You can only lend each book once, so choose a person who will like it.
- You can't lend magazines or newspapers from your Kindle, just books.
- You cannot read the book you lent until it is returned to you.
- To set up the Family Library, both adults must share a payment method.
