The unicorn is a fun and magical costume, perfect for birthday parties and Halloween. Unicorn headbands are easy to make and make great favors to hand out at a kids' birthday party, or to use to dress up. Wearing a horn is the key aspect in a unicorn costume, and adding other elements such as ears and a tail makes it more complete.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Turn a Hoodie into a Unicorn Costume
Step 1. Gather everything you need
Get a hoodie in the color of your choice (pink, purple or white are perfect). You'll also need pieces of felt in complementary colors, such as white and pink, as well as some cotton stuffing, which you can easily find at a fabric or DIY accessories store.
- You will also need a sharp pair of scissors, a needle and thread or a sewing machine, and some pins.
- Alternatively, you can use a hot glue gun to attach the decorations to the sweatshirt if you don't want to sew them.
Step 2. Cut pieces of felt to create the mane
Cut strips that are all the same, approximately 25 cm long and 5 cm wide. Cut them enough to cover the hood starting from the crown (about 10 cm from the front edge) to the hem of the base, spreading them out lengthwise.
Step 3. Attach the felt mane to the hood
Fold each piece of felt into a circle by joining the two shorter sides. Overlap them for about 2 cm. Secure these two pieces along the back of the hood.
- To attach the felt to the hood, use a zigzag seam on your sewing machine. Otherwise you can sew by hand.
- You can also attach these pieces of fabric using pins. This way you can reuse the sweatshirt without the unicorn decorations. Cover the pins with duct tape to prevent the wearer from being pricked.
Step 4. Cut out the felt mane
Once the mane is attached to the hood, cut the edges you joined, making 3 cuts along the length. Finally, reopen all the rings, so that you have a jagged mane.
Step 5. Create the ears
Cut out two triangles of felt in one color such as white, and then cut two more in a color such as pink. The white triangles should be the size of the palm of your hand, and larger than the pink ones.
Overlap a pink triangle with a white one, and sew them together. Do the same thing with the two remaining triangles
Step 6. Join the ears to the hood
Place the ears on the sides of the mane, a few inches behind the front edge of the hood. Secure them with pins. Try wearing the sweatshirt to check that their position is correct. Then sew the ears using a needle and thread, or a few pins.
Step 7. Create the horn
The horn is the essential part of the costume. Cut out a large triangle out of white felt. The triangle should be a few centimeters longer than the cap. Fold the triangle back on itself to its length, and sew it to keep it in place. This will be the horn.
Fill the horn with stuffing cotton. Use a knitting needle or pencil to push the stuffing up to the tip. Make sure the horn is well stuffed, but don't overdo it
Step 8. Attach the horn to the hood
Pin the horn to the center of the cap. Try wearing the sweatshirt and check the position. Using a thread of the same color, sew the horn to the cap.
Use an overedge to secure the horn in place. To make an overedge, pass the needle from under the hood through the fabric of the hood and the horn, then pass the needle through the hood at the base of the horn, and then through the felt again. This creates a loop of wire that will hold the horn in place. Repeat this seam along the entire base of the horn
Step 9. Add a queue
Cut long, thin strips of felt to reach your knees when you put on the costume. They can be of different colors. Join all the strips to their length and sew them to the base of the sweatshirt.
Step 10. Complete the costume
Put on the sweatshirt and close the zipper. Complete the costume with pants or leggings, shoes and gloves of the same or complementary colors.
You can also wear makeup to look like a unicorn
Method 2 of 4: Making a Dream Unicorn Costume
Step 1. Gather everything you need
Create a unicorn costume using a tank top, headband and tulle skirt. You can reuse an old tank top in a pastel or bright color. Buy about 2 meters of tulle in the color of your choice. You will also need an elastic the length of your waist, a headband, rhinestones and a hot glue gun.
Step 2. Decorate your tank top
Place the rhinestones on the tank top along the neck and continuing down to create a "V". Use the hot glue gun to attach the rhinestones to the tank top.
Step 3. Make a tulle skirt
Measure a piece of elastic so that it fits snugly around your waist. Sew the two ends together to make a circle. Cut the tulle into strips twice as long as the skirt should have.
Fold each strip of tulle in half. Join these strips to the elastic. The more strips you add to the elastic, the fuller and softer the skirt will be
Step 4. Make a unicorn headband
Cut out a large triangle out of felt. Fold it back into a cone, and use glue to secure it in place. Attach this cone to the headband using hot glue.
You can also use a cone-shaped piece of sponge, which you can find in DIY stores. Cover the cone with tulle and secure it with hot glue
Step 5. Complete the dress
Wear gold leggings and sandals to complete the costume. Paint your nails a color that matches the dress.
Method 3 of 4: Making a Unicorn Headband
Step 1. Gather everything you need
By attaching a horn and ears to a headband you instantly have a unicorn costume. For this project you will need a headband, felt (white and pink), stuffing cotton, a thick golden thread, and a hot glue gun. You can find all of these accessories at a DIY store or fabric store.
You can also use a piece of ribbon or elastic in place of the headband, although it may not sit still on your head
Step 2. Create the horn
Cut a large triangle out of white felt. The triangle should be about the same height as the circle, and the base of the triangle should be 6-7cm.
- Roll up the felt to form a cone, and use glue to secure it in place. You can also sew it.
- Stuff the horn with cotton. Use a knitting needle or pencil to push the stuffing up to the tip of the horn.
Step 3. Roll the gold thread around the horn
To make the horn even more magical, wrap it in a spiral with the gold thread. Glue one end of the wire to the top of the horn, then roll it around the horn to the base, and put a little more glue to secure everything.
Squeeze the golden thread lightly so that the horn stiffens
Step 4. Attach the horn to the headband
Cut out a circle of felt slightly larger than the base of the horn. Place the circle between the horn and the felt circle. Glue the circle to the horn and headband.
Step 5. Cut out the ears
Take the white felt and fold it in half, then starting from the fold cut a drop shape about 7 cm long, but without cutting out the fold. This way you will have two identical drops bonded to the base. Then cut out smaller drops from the pink felt, using only one layer of fabric.
Step 6. Attach the ears to the headband
Insert the headband in the middle of the white ears on the sides of the horn, and put some glue to fix everything; also glue the tips of the ears. Glue the pink ears on top of the white ones.
Method 4 of 4: Making a Unicorn Costume at the Last Minute
Step 1. Make a horn
Roll a piece of paper into a cone shape. Make cuts at the base of the cone so it can stand upright on your head. Attach a ribbon or rubber band to the base of the horn, using tape or staples. Finally tie the horn around your head.
- You can decorate the horn using markers, pencils, glitter glue or stickers.
- You can also use a gold or silver pointed cap to make a horn. Unroll the hat and cut it off a few inches. Roll up the hat and secure it in a conical shape. Attach a rubber band to the base of the hat using tape or staples.
Step 2. Wear white or pastel-colored clothing
Wear a long-sleeved shirt, leggings, or pants. Wear white, pink, purple, or other pastel colors. You can add stickers to your shirt as a decoration.
Step 3. Create a queue
Use curled ribbon or pastel-colored wool to make the tail. Cut out pieces of ribbon or wool that are as long as the distance between your waist and your knees. Join them together and fasten them to the waist of your pants.
Step 4. Complete the costume
Wear black or brown shoes to mimic clogs. You can also wear black or brown gloves to simulate front clogs.
