Having a speech impediment of whatever kind can be obnoxious, especially if they point it out to you or, worse still, laugh at you. You are not the only one: many have blessings. By reading this article, you will find out how to deal with it.
Steps
Step 1. Find out everything you can about your speech impediment
There are four general categories of blesity:
- The first is that of interdental speech impediment, which occurs when the tongue is interposed between the upper and lower incisors.
- The second is that of the abdominal speech defect, which occurs when the tongue touches the posterior surface of the upper incisors. In both cases, the sound of the s, t and z is similar to the English th (sometimes the abdominal pronunciation defects are classified together with the interdental ones).
- The third is that of the lateral speech impediment, which occurs when air filters from the two extreme sides of the tongue, making the sound of the s and z seem "wet".
- The last is that of the palatal speech impediment, which occurs when the tongue touches the soft palate while speaking.
Step 2. Decide if you want to take action to correct your speech impediment
Typically, this is done in childhood. In any case, you can undertake speech therapy even if you are a teenager or an adult, otherwise you can always practice at home. Whatever age you are, short-term treatment or practice can help you overcome the problem.
Step 3. If you don't want to intervene, that's not a problem at all
Some think that their speech impediment is a unique trait, and therefore prefer not to correct it. You can think of it as a birthmark on the skin, something that can only be attributed to you.
Step 4. Know that some people pretend to have a speech impediment to get attention
This means they think it's cool. For comparison, we could say that having a speech impediment is like having naturally wavy hair, and there are people who have it straight and go to great lengths to curl it. There are people who go out of their way to mimic a trait that is natural to you in order to get noticed.
Step 5. Above all, don't blame yourself and don't feel uncomfortable about having this speech impediment
Whether you decide to correct it or not, don't let it stop you from talking or being confident. Keep your head up! Many have blessings, but that doesn't hinder their success, and you too can manage to live without feeling uncomfortable. Don't let him get in the way of you trying to pursue your desires. Do you want to speak in public? Do it as well! Do you want to sing? Get a microphone! If you are talented, people will not even notice, because they will be hooked on your skills!
Advice
- Having a speech impediment does not mean that you are doomed to failure. Think of all those figures gone down in history despite this trait: Humphrey Bogart, Thomas Jefferson, Winston Churchill, Barbara Walters, Drew Barrymore, Russell Simmons, Anthony Kiedis and Mike Tyson. Or remember that James Earl Jones had a severe stutter as a child, yet his voice is one of the most recognizable in the world. Are you a religious person? You must know that Moses also had a speech impediment!
- Don't let people put you down because you have a speech impediment. Many people are not discreet and will point it out or make fun of you. Try to remember that they are just insecure, which is why they behave this way.
