If you have a dog that you often take out for walks or if you have children who spend a lot of time with them, it is likely that sooner or later you will have to face the problem of chewing gum stuck to your four-legged friend's fur. Chewing gum is difficult to remove from a dog's coat because it is sticky and it is even more difficult if the animal is longhaired. Fortunately, there are other methods to try using some ingredients commonly found at home, before having to resort to trimming the hair on the affected area.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Ice
Follow the ice cube method if the chewing gum is only stuck to the surface of the dog's coat.
Step 1. Take an ice cube and rub it on the chewing gum
Continue the operation until the chewing gum hardens.
Step 2. Use your fingers to break up the hard rubber
Gently peel off the chewing gum one piece at a time, making sure not to pull on the dog's coat.
Step 3. Rub another ice cube on the chewing gum pieces if they start to soften
Repeat the process of rubbing the ice cube on the gum and then peeling off the pieces until they are completely removed from the dog's coat.
Step 4. Next, give your dog a bath to get rid of any remaining sticky traces
Wash your fur with a special shampoo and rinse it thoroughly.
Method 2 of 2: Peanut Butter
The peanut butter method is effective in the event that the chewing gum has stuck to the inside of the dog's coat. If the chewing gum was not completely removed with the first method, you can also follow these directions as a complement to the ice cube method.
Step 1. Put a spoonful of creamy peanut butter on your fingers
Step 2. Rub the peanut butter into the chewing gum and surrounding sticky fur
Step 3. Leave the peanut butter on the dog's coat for about 3 minutes for the peanut butter oil to penetrate and let the chewing gum melt
Step 4. Start removing the chewing gum from the dog's coat by gently sliding it off
Make sure you don't pull the dog's coat too hard.
Step 5. Continue rubbing the peanut butter on the dog's coat and pulling the chewing gum away until it is completely removed
Step 6. Next, give the dog a bath to get rid of any remaining sticky and peanut butter traces
Wash your fur with a special shampoo and rinse it thoroughly.
Advice
- Aside from peanut butter, you can also use other common ingredients you find in the kitchen, such as mayonnaise or butter. The oily nature of these products will help eliminate the stickiness of the chewing gum, thus promoting its removal.
- If the chewing gum is encrusted on the dog's coat so deeply that it cannot be removed completely by the above methods, it is best to simply cut the affected part of the hair as in any case the hair will grow back.
