While it tastes good when you chew it, gum can be a drama when it sticks in unexpected places, like under your shoe, in your hair, or on your clothes. Fortunately, there are some tricks you can use to successfully remove chewing gum from clothes. Try one of the methods below to rid your clothing of chewing gum.
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Freeze
Step 1. Fold the fabric with the rubber facing out
You need to make it small enough to fit in a suitably sized plastic bag. Avoid getting rubber sticking to other parts of the garment.
Step 2. Put the dress in the plastic bag
Seal it and make sure the gum doesn't stick to it.
Step 3. Seal the bag and place it in the freezer for several hours
The gum should freeze completely and become hard, making it easier to remove.
Step 4. Remove the clothing from the freezer when the gum has become hard
Remove the dress from the bag.
Step 5. Scrape or scrape the gum off the dress immediately
Don't let the gum get hot again if possible. You can use any type of blade, such as a butter knife or spatula to remove the gum. If it doesn't come off, put it back in the freezer.
Method 2 of 5: Use a Hot Liquid
Step 1. Soak the area affected by the gum in very hot water
Leave it to soak for a few minutes. Keep the clothing under water and use a toothbrush or sharp knife to remove the gum.
Step 2. Create a jet of steam on the gum
Place the area with the gum near the mouth of a kettle or any other container that produces concentrated steam. Let the gum absorb the steam before scraping it off.
Step 3. Soak the clothes in warm vinegar
Scratch with a toothbrush in small circular motions over the affected area until the gum comes loose. You could continue to soak the clothing in the vinegar several times to keep the rubber soft. Make sure you wash your toothbrush as it gets filled with gum.
Method 3 of 5: Using an Iron
Step 1. Put the side with the gum on a piece of cardboard
Make sure the cardboard is on an ironing board to avoid burning any surface under the cardboard.
Step 2. Put the iron on medium heat
You want the iron to loosen the gum without melting it completely, otherwise it could create an even bigger mess.
Step 3. Place the iron on the side of the dress that does not have rubber
Now the rubber should be inserted between the cardboard and the iron, with the fabric of the suit creating a barrier between the rubber and the iron.
Step 4. Iron the dress until the gum sticks to the cardboard
It may take several minutes for the gum to fully warm up.
Step 5. Pull the cardboard away from the dress
The rubber should have detached from the dress and be with the cardboard. If the gum hasn't come off, keep ironing the dress until it's soft enough.
Method 4 of 5: The Power of Peanut Butter
Step 1. Dip the gum in peanut butter
Make sure you cover the gum completely on all sides. The peanut butter oil should loosen the grip of the gum on your clothes.
Step 2. Let the peanut butter sit for about a minute
You need to give enough time to loosen the gum without staining your clothes too deeply.
Step 3. Scrape off the eraser using a tool with a thin, hard surface such as a putty knife
Step 4. Wash the garment immediately after applying this method
Although peanut butter oil loosens gum, it can still stain clothing. Be sure to use a stain remover or strong detergent and wash immediately after application.
Method 5 of 5: Use Household Tools or Cleaning Products
Step 1. Try using a liquid laundry soap
Pour a spoonful of laundry soap directly onto the gum. Use a toothbrush to scrape around the area where the gum is attached to the dress. Then use a strong scraper like a putty knife.
Step 2. Apply a cleaning solvent oil such as Goo Gone
These products are strong degreasers that make gum removal a breeze. Let the product soak into the gum and then scrape it off with a metal scraper.
Step 3. Get a spray to remove the stickers
Spray this solvent on the gum and let it soak for several minutes. Use a toothbrush or wire brush to remove the gum.
Step 4. Pour some alcohol on the affected area
Let the alcohol penetrate and dissolve the gum for several minutes. Then remove it using a metal scraping tool.
Step 5. Spray the WD40 on the area with the eraser
Let it sit for a few minutes and then use a metal brush or scraper.
Step 6. Spray hairspray directly onto the gum
Scrape it off immediately, do not wait for it to harden, as the lacquer is generally not strong enough to harden the gum completely.
Step 7. Press a strip of duct tape directly onto the eraser
As with the peanut butter method, make sure the duct tape covers the entire surface of the gum. Avoid pressing the adhesive tape too much on the dress. Peel off the tape. Repeat with a new piece of tape if the gum hasn't completely gone away.
Step 8. Apply an ethanol, isobutane, glycol, and / or acetate cream to the gum and then scrape it off as much as possible
These are all substances that help dissolve the gum from the dress. Let the product sit for about a minute and remove the remaining gum using a spatula or butter knife.
Step 9. Rub gasoline or a flammable liquid on the rubber
Be careful to keep these flammable products away from fire while using them. Scrub the gum with a toothbrush and scrape any residue with a metal scraper. Wash the clothing with detergent and hot water on its own before putting it in the washing machine with your other clothes.
Step 10. Put some orange oil on the area
Use a rag to rub the orange oil on the affected area. Wait for it to penetrate the fabric and then use a metal scraper to remove the gum.
Advice
- Try to remove the gum from the dress as soon as possible after it sticks.
- You can use a putty knife, butter knife, or any other metal blunt instrument to remove excess rubber.
- Make sure you wash the garment with detergent immediately after using one of the methods listed above. Many substances contain fatty products that can stain clothes.
- If the method used requires scrubbing, use a sturdy toothbrush or wire brush of some kind.
Warnings
- Some of the products shown in the methods above can stain clothes.
- Be careful when working with hot liquids and flammable products.
- Don't let a child use a sharp scraper.
