Fishing for catfish in a pond is fun. Most people are unaware that this type of fishing is possible. However, in many ponds there are also large ones - read on!
Steps
Step 1. Put your bait on the hook
Use anything that smells a lot, like shrimp. Catfish are attracted to live bait much more than other types of bait. And the more they smell, the better! Try using earthworms, chicken entrails, herring, or other types of fish to catch catfish.
Step 2. Find a place near the shore from which to cast your line
Sit on the shore and launch as far as you can. Use sinkers. This means that you will need to attach small weights to your line to get the lure to go deeper. Try to hold the line tight so that you can feel confidently when a fish will eat the bait.
Step 3. Throw your lure as deep as possible into the pond
In ponds, catfish are normally found in the deepest parts. You will need to try to get the bait as deep as possible into the pond. If that doesn't work, try putting it in other cold, dark areas. These areas could be in the vicinity of:
- dams
- a bunch of rocks
- dam built by beavers
- stumps of trees
- trunks
- under algae or other vegetation. You can almost always find catfish hiding under the vegetation of the ponds.
- If there is a stream running into the pond, the joining point between the two is a great place to look for catfish. Cast your line where the stream flows into the pond. For catfish this is a good place to feed, so they will be looking for food!
Step 4. Night fishing
Night is the best time to catch catfish in a pond, but you can still find them at any time of day, depending on where you are.
Step 5. Catfish like to be in cold areas, so the warmer it gets the deeper they will go
Advice
- Catfish are usually found in cooler, darker places in ponds.
- Catfish in ponds are usually smaller than other fish, but they can sometimes be very large. Expect everything!
- Use a reel. If you don't use it, it will be difficult to catch a catfish.
