The catfish uses the sense of smell and touch to search for food, because it spends a lot of time on bottoms where visibility is poor. Lures with a strong smell attract the highly developed sense of smell of this animal, and many anglers have their own favorite home recipe for bait. This article describes the method to make a "stinker", as well as several tips to create your own and original.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Prepare a Very Strong Smelling Bait
Step 1. Cut 2 kg of very aged cheese into cubes
Many anglers recommend using the orange one, such as cheddar.
Step 2. Transfer the cheese to a large plastic bucket or garbage can
Step 3. Cover it with very hot water
Mash the mixture until you get a paste.
Step 4. Chop 1-1.5kg of raw liver and chicken blood in a blender
Fishing enthusiasts suggest buying the one that comes packaged in trays, because it contains a greater amount of blood that attracts catfish and is a key ingredient in many recipes of this type.
Step 5. Add the pureed offal to the cheese mixture
Mix thoroughly.
Step 6. Close the container with an airtight lid
You must try to get as much air out of the bucket as possible before sealing it by squeezing the sides of the container. As the compound ferments, gases develop; by eliminating the air you prevent the bucket from exploding
Step 7. Let the bait ferment outdoors in a sunny spot for 2-5 days
Step 8. Work the mixture with enough flour to form a dough
Step 9. Secure the bite-sized bait on the hook
Method 2 of 2: Create a Custom Recipe
Step 1. Make a base mix by mixing water with flour or bread until you get a sticky dough
Add the other ingredients by doing a few experiments until you find the most effective combination.
- Raw meat and blood or cooked meat left over from meals;
- Cold cuts or sausages;
- Viscera of fish that you have previously caught;
- Pet food (you can use dry kibble or canned product);
- Cooking oil or the leftover oil from cans of tuna and sardines (the latter has a particularly pungent odor and therefore appetizing for catfish);
- Sweet and dark fizzy drinks (alternatively, you can use the powdered berries to flavor the water);
- Fresh garlic, powdered and garlic salt;
- Other ingredients, such as pork brains, coffee grounds, donuts, insects, bran flakes, chopped bars of soap, chewing gum, confectionery, earthworms, peanut butter, eggs, fish, hot sauce, French fries, cheese corn chips, licorice or marshmallow wheels.
Step 2. Turn the mixture of ingredients into a sticky paste and store it in an airtight container
Step 3. Leave the container outside for several days to let it ferment
Make sure the gases have plenty of room to expand.
