Turning off an iPod Classic is simply putting it into sleep mode. Since the iPod Classic has no applications running in the background, as does the iPod Touch, sleep mode is a great way to shut down the device while conserving the remaining battery power. Method 1 of 2: Use the Play / Pause Button
Step 1. Unlock the iPod
When the "Lock / Hold" switch is active you will see a lock icon next to the battery icon displayed at the top of the screen. If the icon in question is visible, slide the "Lock / Hold" switch to the side opposite the one where the word "Hold" is visible to unlock it.
Step 2. Press and hold the "Play / Pause" button located at the bottom of the dial where the iPod buttons are located
Normally you will have to hold it down for about 10 seconds.
Step 3. Release the button you are pressing when the iPod screen goes black
Your iPod Classic will be turned off.
- Do not touch any other keys on the device, otherwise it will wake up automatically.
- If your iPod doesn't turn off, try playing a song and then pausing it. At this point, press and hold the "Play / Pause" button until the screen turns off.
- If the iPod stops responding or the screen seems frozen, press and hold the "Menu" key and the center button of the selector dial at the same time. After 8-10 seconds the iPod will restart automatically. At this point you will be able to turn off the device by pressing and holding the "Play / Pause" button.
Step 4. Move the "Lock / Hold" switch back to the device lock position
Move the switch to the side where the word "Hold" is visible on the top of the iPod to avoid accidentally turning on the device.

Move the "Lock / Hold" switch to the unlock position, then press any button on the Click Wheel.

Step 1. Unlock the iPod
