Twister is a simple and timeless game, perfect for livening up a party. 2-3 players are required to play. If you've never played it before and lost the instructions, chances are you don't know where to start using that plastic board with lots of colorful circles. In addition to the board, you will need the cardboard dial and black arrow contained in the box, a flat surface and good physical agility.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Prepare to Play

Step 1. Make sure you have 2 or 3 players

We also need a person to play the role of referee. His task will be to rotate the arrow and indicate which part of the body the players must move.

If there are many participants in the party, the advice is to organize turns so that everyone has the opportunity to play. You could create several play stations, each dedicated to a different game, so that guests always have something to do

Step 2. Choose the game space

It must be large, well lit and with a perfectly level surface. For example, you could play in the living room, in the yard or on a platform in the garden.

  • Make sure there is enough room to stretch your arms and legs off the board, to assume the most extravagant positions and to fall without risking injury.
  • Twister can be played both indoors and outdoors. Check out the weather forecast because even a light drizzle could quickly turn the board into a garden slide!

Step 3. Unfold the board and lay it out on the floor

Check again that the underlying surface is flat enough. The side that faces up is white and there are 24 circles of 4 different colors: red, yellow, blue and green.

  • Eliminate creases. During the game the board will tend to shift and curl, this is normal.
  • Consider using shoes, books, or other small heavy objects to hold the corners of the board in place, particularly if you are playing outdoors, as the wind may pick it up while the game is in progress. Avoid using objects with hard edges, such as bricks.

Step 4. Assemble the cardboard dial and its arrow

It is square in shape and is divided into four sectors that represent different colors and parts of the body: "left foot", "right foot", "left hand" and "right hand". Press the center of the black indicator into the slot in the middle of the dial to secure it in place.

  • The arrow must be able to move freely, without friction, and make several turns before stopping. Once stopped, with the tip it will point to one of the four corners of the dial: "left foot", "right foot", "left hand" and "right hand".
  • If the game has been used before, it is likely that the arrow is already mounted. In this case, check that it is able to turn correctly.

Step 5. Wear comfortable clothes

To be able to maintain balance on the board, participants will have to try their hand at increasingly complex and tangled positions, so it is essential to wear comfortable clothes to be able to be flexible. Nobody wants their pants to be ripped in the middle of the party!

  • Soft shorts, leggings or sweatpants are ideal; preferably in a breathable fabric.
  • Take off your heavy vests or anything that might restrict movement before you start playing. Tight-fitting jackets, sweatshirts and sweaters can be an obstacle and if you pull them too much they could break.
  • Those with long hair should tie it up or wear a headband to keep it away from the face. Otherwise they could end up in front of the eyes, preventing the person from continuing to play without taking their hands off the board.

Step 6. Take off your shoes, even if you are outdoors

All players should be barefoot to be able to step on the board.

  • In this way the board will stay clean; furthermore, if you step on your toes, you will avoid hurting yourself too much.
  • You can play barefoot or even barefoot.

Step 7. Warm up your muscles by doing some stretching

If you're not used to contorting your body in unnatural positions, consider stretching your muscles slightly before you start playing. This way you will be able to hold positions longer, so you will have a better chance of being able to win.

  • Bend your torso forward, keeping your legs straight and try to touch your toes with your fingers. Stay in that position for at least ten seconds.
  • Slowly rotate your torso to the right as far as you can, then repeat on the other side. Once you have reached the maximum extension, hold the position for at least ten seconds.

Part 2 of 3: Playing Twister

Step 1. Choose a person who will be the referee during this match

He will have the task of rotating the arrow, indicating the moves and supervising the game.

  • Remember to take turns so that everyone has the opportunity to play. Some players will prefer to spend as much time on the board as possible, while others will be happy to take a break and lead the dance.
  • In case there are only two of you, so not enough to have two players and a referee, you can play without using the dial. In each turn, count to three, then point out one color and the other a part of the body. Alternate in your choice.

Step 2. Climb on the board

Remember to take off your shoes first. The referee must remain outside the "playing court".

  • If you are two players: face each other on opposite sides of the board, next to the word "Twister". Place one foot on the yellow circle and the other on the blue one closest to you.
  • If you are three players: two people must face each other at both ends of the board, next to the word "Twister". Both must place one foot on the yellow circle and the other on the blue one closest to their side of the board. The third player positions himself on the side with the red circles, facing towards the center, with his two feet on the two red circles in the middle.

Step 3. The game begins

The referee rotates the arrow on the dial, then indicates the color and the part of the body it stopped on. All players must follow the instructions.

For example: "Right foot on the green!" or "Left foot on blue!"

Step 4. Place your right or left hand or foot (which have been indicated by the referee) on an empty circle of the specified color

All players must move the same body part on the same color at the same time.

  • For example: suppose you are standing with your right foot on a blue circle and your left foot on a yellow circle, and the referee says, "Right hand on red!". You should bend your torso down, keeping your feet where they are, and touch one of the red circles with your right hand.
  • Do not move any part of the body until the referee gives a new indication. You can lift an arm or leg, for a few moments, to allow another part of the body to pass, but then you must immediately reposition them on the same circle.
  • If with the part of the body that was indicated by the referee you are already touching the specified color, you must move it to another circle of the same shade.
  • No two players are allowed to touch the same circle at the same time, so plan your moves wisely! If two players reach the same circle apparently at the same time, the referee must decide who arrived first.

Step 5. Try not to fall

If a player falls or touches the backboard with a knee or elbow, he is eliminated from the game. The last remaining in equilibrium is declared the winner.

  • Players can only touch the board with their hands and feet.
  • Don't forget to switch roles at the end of each game so that the referee has a chance to play actively. You can also create a new rule: the first person to fall will be the one to referee the next game!

Part 3 of 3: Winning Playing Twister

Step 1. Maintain balance

The aim of the game is to be the last player standing on the board. Try not to take positions that are too complicated because you never know how long the leg or arm will have to stay still like that. You should try to get comfortable!

  • Keep your feet firmly planted on the ground, possibly without spreading them too much.
  • Always stay as close to your center of gravity as possible. Don't lean too far in either direction. Keep your arms and legs as close to your torso as possible and see if you can keep your balance before placing a hand or foot on a circle for good.

Step 2. Push your opponent to the edges of the board

When placing a hand or foot on a color, choose the circle closest to your direct competitor. Round after round there will be fewer and fewer circles that he will be able to reach easily.

Be careful not to physically push other players off the board. Use your body to occupy spaces and block opponents' movements

Step 3. Let others defeat themselves

Try to take up as much space as possible, keep your balance and resist to overtake your opponents. The aim is to remain the last player in balance on the board, after all the others have been eliminated.
