Making a pencil holder is a great way to use scraps that you like but aren't big enough for larger sewing jobs. It's also an eco-friendly choice for those who walk around armed with pencils and reflect your style.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Prepare the Design
Step 1. Decide on the type of fabric
Use a strong fabric. Cotton fabrics are fine, as are corduroy, denim or heavier fabrics.
The stronger the fabric, the longer it will last and will withstand being carried around with sharp objects inside
Step 2. Decide on the size and shape
These depend on the quantity, length and width of the items you want to put in the sachet. The square and rectangular shapes are the most suitable for a pencil holder.
Use a ruler or tape measure to calculate the size of the sachet; to calculate the total size, measure the objects it will contain and leave some extra space around the edges (for ease of movement)
Step 3. Decide which side you will put the zipper on
The zipper can be placed on the short side or the long side of a rectangle, whichever you prefer.
Method 2 of 2: Sew the Pencil Bag
Step 1. Cut the fabric into two square or rectangular pieces of equal size
Leave a 1cm allowance on all sides for seaming.
An alternative is to fold a large piece of fabric in half and use the fold as a base for the sachet. You will need to press the fold line before sewing the sachet if you choose this method instead of using two pieces of fabric
Step 2. Hold the two pieces of fabric together with sewing pins
Step 3. Secure the zipper to the two pieces of fabric, on the side of your choice
Fold 1 inch of fabric over one side of the square or rectangle and iron to flatten it. Place the edge of the zipper under the fold. Sew the zipper with a tight, sturdy stitch.
Step 4. With sides right sides together, sew the three remaining sides of the sachet
Double stitch the seams to ensure resistance.
Step 5. Open the zipper
Turn the sachet to the right side.
Step 6. Finished
Fill it with pencils and related articles and there you have it.
Advice
- You can also use this method to make a purse or a cosmetic bag. You may want to add some liner material if you want to use the sachet for any of these purposes.
- The seam allowance is the amount of fabric that extends beyond the seam.
- Use the instructions that come with the zipper as an additional guide to sewing it.
- If you like to sew by hand, you can make this project with needle and thread. It's quick and easy to do, which makes it great for beginners.
- Reinforce the seams if necessary. You could also use a reinforcement stitch and an interesting finish.
