The dump cake (which literally means "thrown cake") is a simple cake made with fruit (fresh, frozen or canned), prepared for cakes in powder and butter. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that the ingredients are not mixed, which is why it is a dessert very similar to the cobbler. Similarly, the expression dump cake can also refer to a simple cake whose ingredients are mixed in a bowl and then "thrown" directly into a pan. Preparation takes very little time, and once you master the technique, the possibilities and variations will be practically limitless.

Steps
Method 1 of 5: Make the Blueberry Dump Cake
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 180 ° C
Step 2. Pour the blueberries, sugar and cinnamon into an 23 x 33 cm baking dish
Mix the ingredients with a rubber spatula to blend them evenly.
- You can also use other berries, such as sliced strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries. In any case, exclude cinnamon if you decide to use raspberries or blackberries.
- This cake can be easily transformed into a blueberry and lemon dump cake. Exclude the ground cinnamon and add the juice and zest of ½ lemon instead.
Step 3. Pour the cake mix evenly over the blueberries
The preparation should be used dry and should not be mixed. During cooking it will form a crumbled coating similar to that of a cobbler.
If you prefer to make a blueberry and lemon dump cake, replace the sponge cake mix with a lemon cake mix
Step 4. Pour the melted butter over the mix, but don't mix it
Cut the butter into cubes and melt it in the microwave or in a small saucepan over the heat. Pour it evenly over the cake mix, without mixing even in this case. The butter will penetrate the preparation and moisten it.
Step 5. Bake the dump cake for 30 minutes
It will be ready once the coating has taken on a golden color.
Step 6. Let it cool for about 10-15 minutes before serving
Later you can also keep it in the fridge and serve it cold. If you want, accompany it with a knob of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Method 2 of 5: Make a Cherry and Pineapple Dump Cake
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 180 ° C
Step 2. Pour the fruit into a 23 x 33 cm pan
Mix the ingredients with a rubber spatula.
Use canned peaches to modify the recipe. You will need 2 packs of 450g
Step 3. Pour the cake mix evenly over the cherry and pineapple mixture
Use it dry, without mixing it. During cooking the preparation will form a crumbled covering similar to that of a cobbler.
If you have decided to go for the peach variant, try using a sponge cake mix instead and sprinkle ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon on the surface
Step 4. Cut the butter into slices and spread them over the mix
Again, don't mix it with the other ingredients. During cooking the butter will melt and be absorbed by the preparation, moistening it.
Step 5. Bake the dump cake for 45-60 minutes
It will be ready once the topping has begun to bubble and take on a golden color.
Step 6. Let the dump cake cool for 10-15 minutes before serving
You can eat it alone or accompany it with a knob of whipped cream (or a scoop of vanilla ice cream) to make it even more delicious.
Method 3 of 5: Make a Dump Cake with a Slow Cooker
Step 1. Lightly grease the inside of a slow cooker
You can use butter or cooking spray.
Step 2. Add sliced apples, cranberries, vanilla extract, muscovado sugar and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
Mix the ingredients evenly. Set aside any leftover ground cinnamon - you'll need it later.
- You can use fresh or frozen cranberries. In the latter case, do not defrost them: just pour them into the pot.
- You can use any type of apple for this recipe, but Gala, Granny Smith and Jonagold are particularly tasty.
Step 3. In a separate bowl, mix the cake mix with the remaining cinnamon
Use the dry preparation: do not add the other ingredients indicated on the box, such as eggs or water.
Step 4. Pour the mixture over the apples, but do not mix
During cooking, the preparation will form a crumbled coating similar to that of a cobbler.
Step 5. Pour the melted butter over the mixture, without mixing it
First cut the butter into cubes, then melt it in the microwave or in a small saucepan over the heat. Once the butter has melted, pour it over the cake mix. Don't mix the ingredients even in this case.
Step 6. Put the lid on the pot and cook the dump cake on high for 3 hours
The cooking process used by this pot allows to obtain particularly moist and tasty desserts. The cake will be ready once it starts bubbling around the edges.
Step 7. Let the dump cake cool slightly before serving
Once the cake is ready, turn off the pot and remove the lid. Let it cool for about 10-15 minutes before serving. Accompany it with a knob of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream to make it even more appetizing.
Method 4 of 5: Make a Chocolate Dump Cake
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 180 ° C
Step 2. Grease a pan measuring 23 x 33 cm
You can use butter or cooking spray. Set it aside after preparing it.
Step 3. Cook the chocolate pudding mix and milk over medium heat until thick
Put a medium-sized saucepan on the stove and pour the milk over it. Open a package of chocolate pudding mix and add it to the milk. Beat the ingredients to mix them, then adjust the heat to a moderate temperature. Cook the pudding, stirring often until it thickens.
Step 4. Remove the pot from the heat and add the cake mix
Mix everything with a whisk. The dough will be quite thick. Remember to use only the preparation: do not add the ingredients indicated on the box.
Step 5. Pour the batter into the greased pan
Collect all the dough from the pan using a rubber spatula and spread it evenly on the bottom of the pan.
Step 6. Spread the chocolate chips over the dough, but do not mix
The chocolate chips allow you to decorate the cake and enrich its texture.
Step 7. Bake the dump cake for 40-45 minutes, then let it cool for about 10-15 minutes
It is not necessary to remove it from the pan: you can serve it directly inside.
Step 8. Serve the cake
The dessert will be particularly rich and moist thanks to the pudding mix. However, if you want it even softer and wetter, add a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Method 5 of 5: Make a Vanilla Dump Cake from Scratch
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 180 ° C
Step 2. Grease 2 cake pans with a diameter of 20 cm
You can use butter or cooking spray. Set them aside after preparing them.
Step 3. Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt into a large bowl
Using the sieve will help you break down any lumps, making the dough smoother and more homogeneous.
Step 4. Add the butter, milk and vanilla extract
Cut the butter into cubes before placing it in the bowl, so that it is easier to mix. Also make sure it's soft, but not loose.
Step 5. Beat the ingredients with a hand mixer on medium speed for 3-4 minutes
You can also use a planetary mixer or a food processor equipped with whisks. For lack of anything else, use a normal whisk, but consider that it will take longer. Keep mixing the ingredients until you get a smooth mixture.
Step 6. Add the eggs and beat the dough for another 3 minutes
Be sure to scoop the dough from the bottom of the bowl from time to time to make sure you mix all the ingredients well. If you are doing this by hand, keep whisking until the eggs are completely incorporated, with no visible yolk residue left.
Step 7. Pour the batter into the baking sheets and bake the cakes for 30-35 minutes
Use a rubber spatula to scoop all the dough out of the bowl. To understand if the cakes are ready, stick them with a toothpick in the middle: it should come out clean.
Step 8. Cool the cakes
Place the cake pans on a cooling rack and wait 10 minutes. Now, remove the cakes from the baking sheets and let them cool completely before glazing. Make sure they are completely cold before coating them, otherwise the icing will melt.
Step 9. Make the whipped cream icing
In a bowl, mix the heavy cream, vanilla extract and sugar. Don't bang them for now. Put the cream in the fridge for 30 minutes, then whisk it until stiff with an electric mixer on medium speed.
You can use other types of icing. For example, the butter cream one is delicious. You can also buy a ready-made one
Step 10. Assemble and glaze the cake
Place one of the cakes on a tray, then spread a thick layer of frosting over the surface using a butter or cake knife. Place the second cake on top of the first and use the rest of the icing to coat the top and sides of the cake.
- Add sliced strawberries between the layers to make an even more delicious cake.
- Do you have any icing left over? You can create stars on top of the cake using a pastry bag with a star spout.
- Garnish the cake with strawberry slices to make it more colorful.
Advice
- Experiment with different fillings and combinations to make a fruit dump cake. Try using strawberries, peaches, apricots, apples or pears. When making substitutions, be sure to calculate the same doses as the recipe.
- If you see any lumps in the cake mix, mash them with the back of a fork.
