The Windows XP "System Restore" utility is very useful for solving some problems that can cause a decrease in computer performance or a deadlock. The state of the entire system will be restored to where it was at some point in the past using previously created "restore points". Windows XP automatically creates restore points that can be used to restore the entire system, configuration settings, and installed programs to their previous state. Don't worry, this procedure does not affect your personal data in any way (documents, photos, videos, etc.).
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Perform a System Configuration Restore
Step 1. Access the "Start" menu
Click on the button with the "Windows" logo located in the lower left corner of the desktop.
Step 2. Click on "All Programs" in the "Start" menu
It is displayed at the bottom of the list of programs you have used recently.
Alternatively, click on the "Help and Support" icon and type the keywords "system restore" into the search bar. You will be given a detailed description of how the "System Restore" program works and a link to the full user guide. If you want to use the "Help and Support" menu, just skip to step number 6
Step 3. Select the "Accessories" option from the "Start" menu
This is the folder where all the links to the programs preinstalled on Windows XP are contained.
Step 4. Select the "System Tools" item
In this folder you will find all the system programs whose purpose is to check and manage the status of the computer, identify problems and find solutions.
Step 5. Click on the "System Restore" option
The restore wizard will start.
Step 6. Select the item "Restore a previous state of the computer"
Click on the "Next" button.
From the same screen, you can create a new restore point before installing a new program or operating system update. This way, if something goes wrong, you can still restore the system to its previous state
Step 7. Select the date to perform the system restore
Choose a date when your computer was working properly without any problems, such as the date before installing a system or program update.
Step 8. Click on the "Next" button to proceed with the system recovery
The computer will restart to be able to perform System Restore, after which it will restart again to ensure that the new settings are applied correctly.
Step 9. Click the "OK" button when the computer has finished restarting
At this point your work is done. The computer was successfully reset and should have resumed normal operation without any problems.
Method 2 of 2: Cancel System Restore
Step 1. Repeat steps 1 ÷ 6 described in the previous method
If you performed a system restore using the wrong restore point, you can cancel the operation.
Step 2. Select the "Undo the last reset" option
Click on the "Next" button.
Step 3. Click on the "Next" button
This will confirm that you want to undo the last system restore performed via the indicated restore point. The computer will restart to be able to perform System Restore, after which it will restart again to ensure that the new settings are applied correctly.
Step 4. Click on the "OK" button when the computer has finished restarting
At this point your work is done. The computer has been restored to the state it was in before the last configuration restore was performed, so you can choose to use it normally or perform a new restore using the correct date.
Advice
- Before performing system restore, save your work and close all currently open programs.
- Continue to perform system restore using previous restore points until the computer resumes working properly.
