Apple, thanks to its OS X operating system and its Mac with Intel architecture, is conquering ever larger market shares, even many Windows users, in fact, have decided to take the plunge by buying a Mac. For a Mac to be relatively simple, some applications land in the Apple world for the first time. One of these is Microsoft's internet browser, Internet Explorer, which, in May 2012, enjoyed 38% of the US market.
Since Internet Explorer is not natively supported by a Mac, some users have decided to use virtual environments, such as VMWare Fusion, Parallels or Apple's BootCamp, to emulate a Windows computer. In terms of hardware resources this solution is very pretentious, and often not the best at all.
A simple and 'light' solution is to use WineBottler from mikesMassiveMess. This is a free application that will allow you to use Internet Explorer on your Mac.
Steps
Step 1. Download the WineBottler installation file
You can find it at this address: https://winebottler.kronenberg.org/ and its download will finish in a moment.
Step 2. Open the installation file
Copy Wine and WineBottler to your 'Applications' folder.
Step 3. Install X11
If you have not done so before, you will simply need the OS X installation disc. This will prepare the environment for using WineBottler.
Step 4. Start the WineBottler application
You will be asked to confirm that you want to start the application, simply click on the relevant confirmation button.
Step 5. WineBottler will initiate an automatic configuration process and you will see a window titled 'WineBottler - Manage Prefixes' appear
Step 6. Select the 'Install Predefined Prefixes' item
This will load and launch the Internet Explorer installer.
Step 7. From the list shown, select 'Internet Explorer 7' and then follow the on-screen instructions
- You may be prompted to restart your computer. In this case, click on the restart button. Note that only the emulation environment will restart, not your Mac.
- WineBottler will notify you when the installation is complete.
Step 8. Launch Internet Explorer
Enter the URL you want and hit enter. All done!
