Slack channels are chat rooms intended for various projects of a company or group. You can leave a channel at any time by using the menu or by entering special text commands. If you leave a public channel, you can rejoin it later. Instead, if it's a private channel, you'll need to get yourself an invitation to join it again.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Using Text Commands
Step 1. Open the Slack application or log in to the website
Slack's default channel will open, which is "# general".
This method can be used on any version of Slack. The text commands can in fact be used both on the website and on the mobile application
Step 2. Tap or click on the name of the channel you want to leave
To enter text commands, the channel must be open. You can select it from the sidebar.
Step 3. Type "/ leave" in the message field:
this is the command to enter to leave a channel.
The "/ close" command achieves the same result
Step 4. Press
↵ Enter or tap the "Enter" button to send the command. You will delete your profile from the channel and the last channel you were active on will open.
Method 2 of 3: Using the Slack Website
Step 1. If you are logged out of Slack, log in:
is the first step to leave a channel. Once logged in, you will see the "# general" channel.
Step 2. Click on the channel you wish to leave:
you can find it in the menu located on the left. To delete your account from a channel, you must first open it and view it on the screen.
Step 3. Click on the gear icon at the top right
A small menu will open with various options associated with the channel.
Step 4. Select "Leave # channelname"
This will remove your profile from that channel and the last channel you were active on will open.
It is not possible to leave the "#general" channel
Step 5. To see the available channels, click on "Channels" in the left side panel
In this list you can find all the channels you have left. Click on one of them to preview and have the option to access it again.
Method 3 of 3: Using the Slack Mobile Application
Step 1. Open the Slack mobile app and log in if prompted
The "# general" channel will open.
Step 2. Tap the Slack button to open the menu
You will be shown the list of all the channels you belong to.
Step 3. Tap the channel you want to leave
Before you leave it, you need to view it on the screen.
It is not possible to leave the "#general" channel (remember it may have been renamed)
Step 4. Tap the channel name at the top of the screen to view its details
Step 5. Tap "Leave" at the bottom of the menu to delete your profile from the channel
Step 6. Tap "Leave and archive" to leave the channel and archive it
This action will remove all currently connected channel members, archiving their contents.
If you only have this option and want to leave the channel while keeping it open, use the "/ leave" or "/ close" command instead
Step 7. You are free to rejoin the channels you have left, unless they are private
The latter require a new invitation to log in again.
- Open the side menu by tapping the Slack icon.
- Tap the "+" button next to "Channels" to see all your available channels.
- Tap a channel within the list to preview and join.
