The web contains a wide variety of programs created in Java, allowing users considerable interactivity and the creation of very creative web pages. In order to view the contents of these pages, the 'Java Runtime Environment' (JRE) must be installed on the computer. The installation of the 'JRE' takes only a few minutes, regardless of the operating system used. This tutorial shows you how.
Steps
Step 1. This guide shows you how to install the JRE for internet browsers
For instructions on installing Java Development Tools (JDK) on your computer, refer to this tutorial. The Java programming language is different from the language used to create 'JavaScript'. If you need to enable 'Javascript' on your browser, please refer to this tutorial.
Step 2. Visit the official Java website
The Java installation system is identical for all browsers on the market, for this reason you will not have to follow a specific procedure for the web browser installed on your computer. You can download the Java installation file directly from the website.
- The installation procedure will automatically download the necessary files during the installation process. If you need to install Java on a device that does not have a web connection, download the 'offline' version of the installation file, available at this link (Windows).
- Depending on your web browser settings, you will need to accept and manually start the Java download.
- In the case of a Mac OS X 10.6 Java is already pre-installed on the system. On the other hand, in the case of a Mac OS X 10.7 and later versions, Java will be installed on the computer as needed. Also you will have to use a 64-bit browser, such as Safari or Firefox.
- In the case of a Linux system, for Java to work, you must download the installation file and perform the installation and activation manually.
Step 3. Start the installation procedure
When the download of the installation file is finished, select it to start the installation. On OS X, to start the installation procedure, select the '.dmg' file with a double click of the mouse.
Before proceeding with the installation, close any internet browser window, as they will have to be restarted at the end of the installation
Step 4. Follow the instructions of the installation procedure
Read all the instructions accompanying each step of the installation procedure. Unless you decide to deselect the relevant check buttons, the Java installation procedure will install some additional programs, such as an internet browser toolbar. If you do not want your browser configuration settings to change, you will need to carefully read the instructions contained in each single step of the installation procedure.
Step 5. Verify the installation is correct
When the Java installation procedure has finished its work, check that everything is working correctly. You can do this using the test applet on the official Java website, or by searching the web using the keywords 'java test' and selecting the first link that appears in the results.
