This article explains how to use the Skype application to make free calls and video calls or send instant messages from an iPhone.
Steps
Part 1 of 6: Download and Install Skype
Step 1. Open the App Store
This application's icon features a white "A" within a white circle on a blue background.
Step 2. Click on Search
The magnifying glass icon is located at the bottom right of the screen.
Step 3. Press on the search bar
It is located at the top of the screen.
Step 4. Start typing "Skype" in the text field
Step 5. Tap on Skype
This option will appear below the search bar as you type.
Step 6. Click on the Get button
It is located next to "Skype."
Step 7. Click on the Install button
It will appear in place of the one that says "Get".
If prompted, enter your Apple ID and / or password
Part 2 of 6: Sign in to Skype
Step 1. Open the Skype application
The icon looks like a S. inside a white cloud.
Step 2. Enter your username
Write it in the field immediately below the word "Skype" at the top of the screen.

If you don't have a Skype account, click on Create an account at the bottom of the screen.
- Enter your phone number and a password. Alternatively, if you prefer to register using your email address, select Use your e-mail address. Then, click on Come on.
- Enter your first and last name, then click on Come on.
- Enter your country and date of birth, then click on Come on.
- Enter the code that was sent to your email address or phone number to verify your identity, then click Come on.
- Enter the characters that appeared on the screen to prove that you are not a bot and then select Come on.
- If prompted, enter your phone number and press ➲.
- Enter the code received on your mobile to verify your number, then follow the instructions on the screen to proceed with setting up your account.
Step 3. Enter your password
Step 4. Click on Login
This blue button is located below the password field.
Part 3 of 6: Adding Contacts
Step 1. Click on Contacts
The icon looks like a blue address book and is at the bottom left of the screen.
Step 2. Click on the "Add a new contact" button
It features a blue human shape and is located in the upper right corner of the screen, next to the "+" symbol.
Step 3. Start typing a contact name
Enter it in the search bar located at the top of the screen.
- You can only add contacts who already have a Skype account. If you want to add someone who doesn't have an account, select Invite friends on Skype and follow the on-screen instructions.
- To invite someone you have already saved in your address book on your iPhone, tap on Contacts within the Skype application and scroll down until you find the section called "Phone Contacts". Select Invite next to the contact you want to communicate with via Skype.
Step 4. Select a name
As you type, suggestions will appear below the search bar. When you see the name of the person you want to add, tap on it.
Step 5. Click on Send contact request
By doing so, a request will be generated which will be sent to the contact you wish to communicate with via Skype. Once he has accepted your request, he will be added to the "Contacts" list.
Part 4 of 6: Making Video Calls
Step 1. Click on the Contacts button
The icon looks like a blue address book and is located at the bottom left of the screen.
Step 2. Select a contact
Tap on the name of the person you want to call.
Step 3. Click on the button that allows you to forward video calls
The icon looks like a blue video camera located in the upper right corner of the screen.
Step 4. Wait for the connection to be established
Once connected with your contact, the buttons appearing on the screen will allow you to select the iPhone camera you want to use (front / back), mute the audio, adjust the volume or activate the instant messaging mode.
Step 5. Press the red button to hang up
Part 5 of 6: Making a Call
Step 1. Click on Contacts
The icon looks like a blue address book and is located at the bottom left of the screen.
Step 2. Select a contact
Tap on the name of the person you want to call.
Step 3. Click on the button that allows you to forward calls
The icon looks like a blue telephone handset and is located in the upper right corner of the screen.
Step 4. Wait for the connection to be established
Once connected, your contact's profile picture will appear on the screen, above the timer showing the duration of the call. The buttons that appear on the screen allow you to perform various actions, such as switching to a video call, mute the audio, activate the speakerphone or open instant messaging mode.
Step 5. Press the red button to hang up
Part 6 of 6: Send an Instant Message
Step 1. Click on Contacts
The icon looks like a blue address book and is located at the bottom left of the screen.
Step 2. Select a contact
Tap on the name of the person you want to send a message to.
Step 3. Click on Write message here
This text field is located at the bottom of the screen.
Step 4. Write a message
To do this, use the keyboard at the bottom of the screen. You can also use the gray buttons located below the text field to attach other content to the message:
- Press the "Gallery" icon in the lower left corner below the message field to attach an image already on your phone.
- Tap on the camera symbol next to "Gallery" to take and send a new photo.
- Tap on the video camera symbol inside a balloon to send a video message.
- Press on the "Location" pin, which looks like a drop with a white circle, to share your location.
- Press on the card symbol (located on the right on the menu bar) to share a contact's data.
Step 5. Click on the "Submit" button
It looks like a white arrow in a blue circle and is on the right side of the message field.
Advice
- Make sure you have a good internet connection when making video calls, otherwise the image quality may be affected.
- To call mobile or landline numbers, press the button that allows you to forward calls at the bottom right of the screen, then enter the number using the keyboard that appears.
Warnings
- Video calls use a lot of bandwidth, so if you're in data connection mode, you'd better make them using Wi-Fi rather than your mobile operator's network.
- Making phone calls and sending messages from one Skype account to another is free, but making calls to landlines and mobile phones or texting from the Skype application is subject to a fee.
