Watermelon smoothies or smoothies are fresh and refreshing, the perfect dessert for a hot summer day. Usually, they are made with a few drops of lime juice and mint or basil, but there are variations that are more similar to the traditional smoothie, which include milk and yogurt. Steps
Method 1 of 4: Make a Refreshing Watermelon Smoothie
Step 1. Slice 300 grams of watermelon
Cut the watermelon into cubes and remove the peel. Alternatively, you can divide it in half, before extracting the pulp with a melon or ice cream spoon.
Step 2. Put the watermelon in the blender
If you prefer a more refreshing drink, you can add 400 grams of strawberries or 1 tablespoon of lime juice. You can use fresh or frozen strawberries; with these you will get a thicker and colder drink.
Step 3. Add fresh mint or basil leaves
These herbs give the watermelon a refreshing flavor. Make sure you chop them finely before using them so they blend better with the rest of the ingredients.
Step 4. Complete the preparation with a few drops of agave nectar or honey
If the watermelon you are using is already very sweet or you don't like overly sugary drinks, you can skip this step.
Step 5. Add 3 or 4 ice cubes to add texture to the drink
If you've decided to use frozen strawberries, you probably don't need to add ice.
Step 6. Close the blender and chop the ingredients until smooth
Keep blending until the ice has crumbled and blended completely. If you can't chop the ingredients well, stop the blender and use a rubber spatula to push the still whole parts of the mixture to the sides of the container.
Step 7. Pour the drink into a tall glass or two and serve it
For an extra touch, you can garnish each glass with a small slice of watermelon, a mint or basil leaf.
Method 2 of 4: Make a Creamy Watermelon Smoothie
Step 1. Slice 300 grams of watermelon
Cut the watermelon into cubes and remove the peel. Alternatively, you can divide it in half, before extracting the pulp with a melon or ice cream spoon.
Step 2. Pour the watermelon into the blender and add the milk
You can use whatever type of milk you prefer - cow, almond, coconut, or soy.
Step 3. Add a few drops of agave nectar or honey as needed
If the watermelon is already very sweet or if you just aren't particularly greedy, you can skip this step.
Step 4. Add 5 to 10 ice cubes
The more ice you add, the thicker the milkshake will become. If you prefer it not to water, use ice cubes made with frozen milk instead of water.
Step 5. Close the blender and turn it on until smooth
The ice should be completely crushed and the ingredients blended evenly. If you notice that the milkshake is uneven, stop the blender and scrape the ingredients that are still solid on the sides and bottom of the appliance, using a rubber spatula.
Step 6. Pour the smoothie into a tall glass or two and serve immediately
You can drink it as it is or garnish it with a splash of agave nectar or honey. To add a touch of whimsy, you can also place a small wedge of watermelon on the edge of each glass.
Method 3 of 4: Make a Creamy Strawberry and Watermelon Smoothie
Step 1. Slice 300 grams of watermelon
Cut the watermelon into cubes and remove the peel. Alternatively, you can divide it in half, before extracting the pulp with a melon or ice cream spoon.
Step 2. Add the watermelon and strawberries to the blender
You can use fresh or frozen strawberries. In the second case, you will get a thicker and colder milkshake. If you decide to use fresh strawberries, be sure to remove the stalks before pouring them into the blender.
Step 3. Add the Greek yogurt
If you prefer a less sweet smoothie, use plain yogurt or vanilla yogurt for a more delicious drink. You can use the type of yogurt you want: fat-free, 2% or whole.
Step 4. Pour in the milk
You can use whichever type you prefer: cow, almond, coconut or soy. Our advice is to use a mix of almond and coconut milk.
Step 5. Top off the drink with some agave nectar or honey if needed
If the watermelon you're using is already very sweet (and you've added vanilla yogurt), you probably won't need the nectar or honey.
Step 6. Top off the smoothie with some ice
If you've used frozen strawberries, you probably won't need many cubes, just a couple of them! Conversely, if you used fresh strawberries, you can add more.
Step 7. Close the blender and operate it, until the mixture is smooth
Continue to chop the ice until it is completely melted, so that the watermelon, strawberries, yogurt and milk are perfectly combined. You shouldn't notice any lumps, streaks or color variations.
Step 8. Pour the smoothie into two tall glasses and serve immediately
To add a touch of whimsy, garnish the glasses with a watermelon or strawberry wedge.
Method 4 of 4: Make a Cucumber and Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie
Step 1. Slice 300 grams of watermelon
Cut the watermelon into cubes and remove the peel. Alternatively, you can divide it in half, before extracting the pulp with a melon or ice cream spoon.
Step 2. Peel, remove the seeds and cut 150 grams of cucumbers into cubes
Peel them with a potato peeler, then cut them in half lengthwise. Scoop out the seeds with a spoon or scoop, then throw them away. Finish chopping the cucumber and save what's left over for another recipe.
Step 3. Pour the frozen watermelon, cucumber and strawberries into a blender
If you can't find them frozen at all, you can use fresh ones, just making sure to remove the stalks and leaves before using them. In this case, if you want to get a colder and thicker smoothie, you should add more ice.
Step 4. Finely chop the mint leaves and put them in the blender
If you can't find mint leaves, try basil leaves. Both of these herbs go well with watermelon, cucumber and strawberries.
Step 5. Top off the drink with some ice cubes and water
If you are using fresh strawberries, use more cubes. To give the drink more flavor, you can add coconut water instead of regular water.
Step 6. Close the blender and operate it until smooth
Continue chopping the ice until it is completely melted and all the ingredients are evenly blended. You shouldn't notice large pieces of watermelon, cucumber or strawberry.
Step 7. Pour the drink into a tall glass or two and serve it
If you wish, you can garnish the glasses with a slice of cucumber on the rim or with a couple of mint or basil leaves.
Advice
- Can't find agave nectar or honey? Try granulated sugar or a sweetener!
- If the watermelon is very ripe, you probably won't need to add any sweeteners to the smoothie.
- If the smoothie is too thick, add plain or coconut water to dilute it.
- If the smoothie is too liquid, add ice cubes. If strawberries are in your recipe, you can thicken the drink with some frozen strawberries as well.
- If you want to add ice cubes to a milk or yogurt-based smoothie, you can use cubes made from frozen milk or frozen yogurt so the drink doesn't get watery.
- For an added touch, sprinkle some hemp or chia seeds on top of the ready-made smoothie, so it resembles watermelon seeds.
