A train driver maneuvers or drives a train. He is also called a locomotive engineer, railway engineer or footplateman. It's a great job for someone who likes to travel and see the country and doesn't mind being away from home for days or weeks. The pay is good and gives you the benefits of union membership such as job security and retirement.
Steps
Step 1. Admission requirements
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- A full medical checkup and drug test is required.
- You need to be able to work alone for long periods, handle emergencies and think for yourself.
Step 2. Attend the training course, consisting of classroom study and field experience
Training can take several weeks or months. You must participate in an approved program of the Federal Railways Administration.
Most train drivers attend schools run by the railway company, but some choose to attend a university and pursue a bachelor's degree in railway operations
Step 3. Get a basic job in a railway company, as a laborer, marshalling yard worker, brake operator, or as a controller
Gain complementary skills and experiences. If you want to ride commuter trains, you may need to start by driving buses.
Step 4. Pass the qualification exams for different job positions up to that of train driver
Before you can drive a train you need to pass a federal license exam.
- You will need to take an additional course in the classroom, in simulators, and in the workplace before you can take the licensing exam.
- Additionally, you will be required to periodically pass tests to maintain your license.

- Railway works are currently in decline due to computerization. However, large numbers of workers are expected to retire between 2010 and 2020, creating job opportunities.
- To find a railroad job, visit the websites of rail companies such as Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, or CSX Transportation. You can also find a job by checking the list published by the U. S. Railroad Retirement Board. If you want to drive commuter trains or subways, look for jobs in the public transport area.
