Are you ready to enter the wonderful world of work? Fantastic! However, if you are under 18, you may need a permit. Nothing to worry about: this involves a rather simple process. Here's how to apply for the necessary documents without too much hassle!
Steps
Step 1. Do an internet search
Each state has different rules regarding the work permit, some don't even provide it. In fact, the federal government doesn't require it - the law changes at the state level.
You can find here a list of states and their regulations, such as age requirements and places where permits are issued
Step 2. Get the application form
You can do this at school, at headquarters, or online at your state's Department of Labor website. Go to your high school main office to ask if they can help you.
The modules change from state to state. Here's the one from California
Step 3. Get all the necessary information and signatures
You will have to fill out part of the form yourself, but you will probably also need the details and signature of a guardian and your potential employer. Don't hesitate to ask! For them it is a routine task.
- Some states don't issue the permit until you find an employer willing to hire you. They may also ask you for details on workload and working hours.
- You may also need a medical certificate and / or driver's license.
Step 4. Submit the completed form to the right office
An employee of your school or the superintendent of the schools in the area can do this. Ask which signature you need.
- If you are studying at home, you may want to contact the area superintendent or call the local Department of Labor office. They could guide you through the process.
- The authorized employee should give you the work permit. Nothing simpler! You won't have to pay anything and you won't have to wait. The document is usually printed on a very common A4 sheet, so don't lose it!
Step 5. Show the permit to your employer, who should make a photocopy to keep for his records
Then, put your copy aside. Skip this step if you have obtained the certificate online (as is the case in some states).
Many states have sites that allow employers to check for permission from a minor. If your boss has any doubts, show them: the answer is just one click away
Advice
- Collect all the necessary documents before you start looking for a job.
- You may need a parent's signature, a note from a doctor saying you are in good health, proof of your age (usually a birth certificate or driver's license is enough), and in some cases, your employer should write a letter stating how many hours and which days of the week you will be working.
- In some states and cities, all school tests must be passed to receive a work permit.
- If you are studying at home, you may need to submit your application to the state office of the Department of Labor.
- Have your prospective employer fill out the missing parts of the form to conclude.
