When a rabbit lies on its stomach and appears completely relaxed, it is in a state often referred to as a "trance" or "hypnosis", but in reality it is "tonic stillness", which is a fear-induced defense mechanism. It is considered the last attempt of the prey not to be killed by the predator. When a rabbit is sent into a trance, they are at their highest level of fear and may even die, so consult your vet before considering this controversial procedure. However, it may help to prevent your pet from getting hurt when it doesn't allow you to physically examine it, but think carefully before using it to trim its nails or brush it, as some people do.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Deciding whether to send him into Trance
Step 1. Consult your veterinarian
Some people are in favor of this procedure, others a little less, so you should listen to the opinion of your trusted veterinarian regarding the health of your rabbit. It is especially important if you suffer from certain diseases. Putting a rabbit into a trance can be very physically dangerous, but at the same time it can allow you to inspect its body and spot some symptoms. Listen to what your vet says before deciding.
Step 2. Determine if trance is needed
If you believe your rabbit is injured but can't find out where, or if you need to treat a wound, trance may be your best bet. If, on the other hand, you just hope to cut his nails or brush him without too much difficulty, it may not be worth it. The decision also depends on the animal.; some rabbits seem to come out of the trance state calmly, while others tremble with fear.
Step 3. Learn how to act
If you are nervous, ask a friend or family member to assist you before starting. It is important that you are confident in your movements when handling the rabbit: he can tell if you are nervous or stressed.
Part 2 of 3: Sending the Rabbit into Trance
Step 1. Get ready
Put a towel on your legs. You need to sit in a chair that allows you to keep the rabbit's head lower than the rest of the body. Get everything you need and keep it handy. If you need to dress a wound, you will need to use the antibiotic and bandage. If you need to do a toilet job, you will likely need a brush, nail clippers, and other tools.
Step 2. Get your rabbit
Put your right hand under the front legs and the left hand on the hind leg. Hold it in the crook of your arm, much like you would a newborn baby. Turn it over on the towel on your lap. Be gentle! It has to be on its stomach, a position that these animals generally do not like. Make sure the hindquarters are higher than the head. It will fidget, but typically not for long.
Step 3. Calm him down
Some rabbits immediately go into a trance, others need a little help. With one hand, massage the chest between the front legs. With the other, gently rub your head. These movements could cause him to immediately enter the trance state.
Step 4. Support his body
Your furry friend will quickly relax his head, freezing. If he wiggles his legs, just touch them and they should stop. Then stroke their front legs, back legs and stomach so that they feel your presence. Keep it still while it is in a trance, because you don't know when it will come out. Usually, awakening is accompanied by abrupt movements and twisting that could seriously injure him if not maintained properly.
Part 3 of 3: Concluding the Trance
Step 1. Do everything you need to in the shortest time possible
Inspect him, cut his nails, brush him or medicate him. You can't know how long he will be in a trance, but usually the maximum duration is 10 minutes.
Step 2. Prepare for his awakening
She may suddenly fidget while in your arms! This is why it is important to keep it still during the trance. In other cases, he may wake up more slowly and enjoy some head massage as he regains control.
Step 3. Hold it still and turn it gently when the trance is over
Pamper him a little. Put it on the floor and store the material you used.
