Each dog is different from the other. Should you feed him this? Or that? Dog food contains essential nutrients that help dogs grow and stay healthy. Read on to learn more.
Steps
Step 1. Wash the dog bowl thoroughly and make sure it is clean
Step 2. Ask the vet what type of dog food you should buy
There are different types based on the sizes and ages of the animals. It is essential, for example, that a puppy receives treats made specifically for puppies and not food for adult dogs.
Step 3. Ask the veterinarian for the appropriate amount of food to give to your dog
Although there are directions on the bag, your vet may adjust these amounts based on your dog's weight.
Step 4. If your dog doesn't like a certain brand, try another one
Some dogs are picky and don't like all types of food. You can also make it tastier with chicken broth or by mixing a spoonful of warmed food into the kibble.
If you change brands, remember to do it gradually. If you suddenly switch from one type of food to another, your dog may have an upset stomach. The mess can be safely avoided by gradually introducing the food mixed with the old food for a while before switching completely to the new food
Step 5. Follow a specific schedule for feeding him
Every day at the same time.
Step 6. Remember that dogs also need fresh, clean water always available
Step 7. Cuddle and play with your dog for a while when you are done with feeding
This will make him more comfortable around you.
Advice
- Be careful around the dog, especially if you don't know him.
- If you can, have the dog sit down and have him look at you (not the food) before receiving the food and try not to look him straight in the eye. This lets the dog know that you are in control and that you are not intimidated by the dog.
- Feed the dog after eating. You want him to know that you are the master, not the other way around.
- If you have a pit bull, it's a good idea not to pet him while he's eating.
Warnings
- Avoid foods that are dangerous for your dog. Examples: chocolate, onions or raisins.
- Some dogs react aggressively if you try to pull their food away from them while they are eating.
- Do not give bones to your dog, unless they are specially made. They are often chipped and could injure the dog's throat and mouth.
- Be sure to feed the dog too much or too little depending on his weight.
- Do not give the dog human food, it could make him very sick.
