Do you want to add a pop of color to your hair? The Kool Aid is fun, economical and chemical-free, perfect for temporarily dyeing the ends of your hair. Read this article to know how!
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Prepare the Hair
Step 1. Make sure the hair is completely dry
For best results, wash them the day before dyeing them. Hair that is too dirty or too damp will not absorb enough color.
Step 2. Brush them well to remove any knots
Use a brush or comb to detangle your hair, and make sure there is no residue from styling products (gel, hairspray, etc.) before coloring it.
Part 2 of 4: Dyeing the Hair
To be repeated twice
Step 1. Pour two packets of sugar-free Kool Aid and two cups of water into a pot
Put it on the stove and bring the mixture to a boil.
The Kool-Aid is available in various colors: try red (cherry), pink (raspberry) and purple (grape). For a more subtle color add more water. For a more intense one use less water and / or more Kool-Aid
Step 2. Remove the pot from the heat
Put the Kool-Aid in a cup or bowl. Dip the ends of your hair into the liquid and wait 3 to 10 minutes if you have very thick hair. This way the color will set.
Decide how much hair you want to dye. For the tips, dip 4-6cm of hair into the liquid. For a more intense look, try dipping it up to 10cm
Step 3. Remove the hair from the liquid and pat it dry
You can use paper towels or a towel if it's okay to stain it (the color will stay on the fabric).
Step 4. Let your hair dry completely before washing
Enjoy your new look!
Remember that some types of Kool-Aid contain sugar, so once your hair is dry, rinse it immediately to prevent it from sticking and attracting insects
Part 3 of 4: Remove the Color
Step 1. Wash your hair more often
The Kool-Aid can take 1 to 3 months to discharge, depending on your natural hair color. You can speed up the process by washing your hair more often than usual, with any shampoo.
Step 2. Use baking soda, only on long hair
Fill a large pot with water, making sure you have enough oats to soak your dyed hair. Once the water boils, add a spoonful of baking soda. Remove the pot from the heat. Taking great care, immerse and immediately pull the tips of the hair out of the water for about 1 minute. Avoid burning your hands, arms, skin, etc.
- The water will sizzle a little and the color will come off remaining in the pot. This method should remove it almost entirely in a few minutes.
- Throw away the water and wash your hair immediately. Remember to use the conditioner to restore moisture to the hair.
Step 3. Use the vinegar
Mix 1 tablespoon of vinegar with a cup of warm water. Pour the mixture into your hair while in the shower, letting it sit for a couple of minutes before rinsing off. Then wash your hair as usual.
Part 4 of 4: Maintain the Color
Step 1. Wash your hair less
However, the color will drain over time, based on the number of washes to which you will subject it. You can slow down this process by washing your hair less than usual.
Step 2. Change shampoo
Use a shampoo specifically for dyed hair, or switch to a natural one without harsh chemical additives such as sulfates or other substances that can ruin the hair and cause the color to fade faster.
Step 3. Use sunscreen products
Prolonged exposure to the sun will make the color fade faster. Protect your hair from the sun using specific products, with a scarf or hat.
Advice
- If you have dark hair, leave it in the color for longer.
- The Kool-Aid stains clothes and towels, so wear a t-shirt that you can possibly get rid of. Alternatively, wear a garbage bag around your neck and shoulders to protect your hair.
- Red (cherry) looks good on dark hair.
- The color will stain your hands, so wear latex gloves, unless you want to walk around with colored hands for a couple of days.
- Avoid using shampoo on the colored part of your hair if you want to make the color last longer.
- The duration of the dye depends on the base color of the hair. On dark hair the color will be less visible and will drain in 2-3 washes. On very light hair it can last up to a month.
- If you have long hair, you could do a ponytail or braid.
- If you are not sure what color and what intensity you want, take a test on a strand to see the result.
- Use conditioner if you want to give the color a softer texture.
- Wear an old shirt that you can safely stain.
