Many people complain that they cannot have their own style, but unless someone else chooses their clothes in the morning, everyone already has one. If you think so too, keep reading the steps below and start recognizing your favorite pieces to give your wardrobe a personal touch.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Start from your Wardrobe
Surely you have already created your own style without realizing it. Look at what items you have in the closet.
Step 1. Carefully evaluate your wardrobe
Look in the wardrobe and drawers, look at the items you have purchased, perhaps you will notice that there are recurring choices, even in an unconscious way.
- Are most of your dresses informal?
- Are there predominant colors?
- Do you prefer long dresses and skirts?
- Do you normally buy garments made of synthetic or natural fibers?
- Do you have a lot more pants than skirts?
Step 2. Remove your absolute favorite clothes from the wardrobe and set them aside on top of the bed
Choose only the clothes you truly love and never want to part with.
Step 3. Look at the items you have chosen and ask yourself why you like them so much
- Why are they very comfortable?
- Why do they make you feel sexy? Sure of you? Lively?
- Think about how you feel every time you wear your favorite clothes. Are there any things they have in common?
Step 4. Decide if you usually wear clothes to impress others, or to feel good about yourself
Do you prefer fashion or comfort?
Step 5. Are your favorite clothes suitable for your daily activities?
- Are there any items that you keep buying because they appeal to you even if they don't suit your everyday life at all? If there are, these dresses are the expression of "your style".
- If your attention often rests on pink summer dresses, but for work reasons you have to wear formal suits, try to bring hints of your style back into your daily life, for example add a scarf or flashy earrings, while remaining in the limits of the rules imposed by your company. You won't be able to go to work in your pink minidress, but at least you will be able to insert details to express your personality.
Method 2 of 4: Consult the Experts
If you realize that your wardrobe is made up only of a jumble of goods purchased on sale without any reason, then seek the advice of experts in the field of fashion.
Step 1. Buy at least 3 fashion magazines and a few other purely women's magazines, then browse them by observing how the garments in the photos are combined
Step 2. Cut out the pictures of the clothes that strike you
Don't think too much, look at the photos and make an instant decision. If you like something, cut the photo and put it aside.
Step 3. Divide the collected images into various categories, related to your lifestyle
For example, you could label a group as “Free Time”, then “Work” and “Elegant and Formal Heads”.
Step 4. Take a look at all the categories and look for similarities
- Are there mainly tracksuits and jeans in the “Free Time” category?
- How are the shirts you have chosen, a little charming or all extremely sober?
- Do tight-fitting garments predominate or those that are wider and more comfortable?
- The answers to these questions will help you identify your personal style.
Method 3 of 4: Shopping Time
Look at the windows of many shops. If you know about fabrics and know how to recognize them by touch, touching the garments with your hand will be as important as observing their style and their colors.
Step 1. Try shopping at some vintage or second-hand clothing stores
In these places you could find a wide variety of styles, able to represent any type of personality. And remember, even if you enter the store, look at 40 items and don't like even one, at least you will get an idea of what is not suitable for you.
Step 2. Go to a trendy clothing store or the women's section of a large shopping mall
Seek advice from salespersons. Often the sales staff can give you some good advice, but before you buy the clothes try to understand if their advice is real and sincere, or if they are just trying to push you to buy.
Step 3. Look around you and see how others dress, what impresses you about their style
Think about the reasons why you are attracted to one dress rather than another. If you see something you really like, you could stop and ask someone where they bought it.
Method 4 of 4: Keep the Ground Rules in Mind
Whatever your personal style, there are a few points you must always keep in mind.
Step 1. Purchase a plain black dress if you don't already have one
A little black dress is suitable for any occasion. You can always spice it up with some intriguing accessories. Love being yourself. Love yourself to be you.
Step 2. Get a variety of different types of belts, narrow, wide, black, patterned
A belt can quickly change the look of a dress.
Step 3. Use scarves and accessories
Long scarves can also be worn around the waist, while short scarves can be tied at the neck to enhance whatever garment you are wearing. You can also use a scarf to create an original hairstyle.
Step 4. Get several nylons or other fabrics
Opaque or patterned tights are really impressive when worn with short skirts.
Step 5. Fill your jewelery box with basic accessories, such as earrings or necklaces
Even a pair of silver-colored hoop earrings, a tailored shirt and a pair of designer jeans will be a perfect fit for a multitude of occasions.
Step 6. Have silk tank tops or t-shirts handy
They can be worn under many garments.
Step 7. Get at least a black sweater and a basic color jacket
A jacket can be worn with both classic trousers and jeans, or even with a dress.
Step 8. Even if you prefer bright colors, keep at least a couple of neutral colored suits in your closet
They are garments that will never go out of fashion and are suitable for many occasions where more sober or formal clothing is required.
Step 9. Include at least one fashionable, yet comfortable pair of shoes and a few sandals in your wardrobe
A pair of shiny decolleté shoes are always a good choice.
Advice
- Try a little bit of everything. Some garments look gorgeous on the mannequin but once on they may not suit you at all, while a dress that doesn't convince you on the crutch could be wonderful on you.
- Go shopping alone. It's about your personal style, you only have to like it.
- Organize an exchange of clothes, invite friends who would like to get rid of some clothes and compare each other, you could exchange the clothes you don't like anymore. You will be able to win new garments without having to spend anything.
- Use padded crutches for more delicate items so they don't get damaged.
- Recycle your father's used ties, you could make original belts with that fabric.
- Each of us has our own style. Look inside yourself to find what can best express your personality and, therefore, your style!
