A duvet is a quilted blanket that goes over the bed. A duvet cover is an accessory that protects the duvet, making it last longer. Think of it as a quilt pillowcase. You can also use a duvet cover to quickly and cheaply change your bedroom decor as the seasons or mood change. If you want to know how to make duvet covers to save money and show your style, read the following instructions on how to make a duvet cover with a zipper.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Part 1: Choosing the Fabrics
Step 1. Measure your duvet
You will need two pieces of fabric large enough to cover the duvet, plus an extra 2.5 cm along the length and width as you will need to allow for 1.27 cm.
It is advisable to calculate 1.27 cm for each seam if you want to make a snug duvet cover. Leave more space if you want a duvet cover that fits wider or if your duvet is very thick
Step 2. Choose fabrics that are soft to the touch
Look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and lint and ball formation (anti-pilling), which are easy to wash.
Step 3. Buy several assembling fabrics to suit your duvet
You can plan to make one side out of a single piece of fabric or put them together as a quilt made up of different fabrics. How to sew the duvet cover is entirely up to you, and it's a project that can express your artistic talent
Step 4. Leave extra fabric if you have designs or stripes to match the fabric
Step 5. Remember to buy enough fabric for both sides of the duvet cover
Step 6. Take a shortcut if you wish by buying two plain sheets of different colors, large enough to cover the duvet
Step 7. Buy some matching thread and a long zipper
Step 8. Wash the fabric according to the washing instructions
Dry it in a dryer to remove any adhesive residue and help set the color. If the fabric shrinks, it will in this first wash cycle.
Method 2 of 4: Part 2: Cut and Assemble the Fabrics
Step 1. Spread the fabric
Cut the pieces needed to make the top or bottom of the duvet cover to the right size.
Step 2. Pin the pieces together, with the inside facing out
Step 3. Stretch the zipper close to where you want it to go and pin the area
Method 3 of 4: Part 3: Close the Seams
Step 1. Sew the three sides where the zipper will not go, making a 1.27 cm seam
Step 2. Iron the seams
Step 3. Turn the duvet cover straight side through the zipper opening
Step 4. Sew starting from the corner where you placed the first marks for the zipper
Step 5. Basting to secure the thread
Step 6. Skip the zipper hole and sew the other side in the same way
You should now have an opening in one side of the fabric the length of the zipper
Step 7. Set your sewing machine to basting
Close the opening.
Step 8. Press the seam
Step 9. Center the zipper tab over the machine-basted portion of the seam
Hold the zipper in place with hand basting or clear tape.
Step 10. Reset the sewing machine to normal stitch
Attach the foot for sewing zippers.
Step 11. Sew the right side of the fabric close to the zipper
When you get to the end, turn the fabric over and sew along the other side of the seam.
Step 12. Repeat the process on the other side of the zipper
Turn the fabric again, cross the seam and complete the row of stitches exactly where you started it.
