Keeping your bedroom clean, sanitized and cool is very important. Many people associate these things with cleaning sheets, pillow cases, dusting the bed frame and closet, or vacuuming the floor. However, duvets collect a lot of dust and dirt and should be treated with equal care. By regularly cleaning your quilt, you will not only have a healthier environment, but you will greatly increase the longevity of your quilt and your other bed accessories. Many details about this depend on the fabric of your quilt, so read the label and follow these steps.
Steps
Step 1. Find out if your quilt needs cleaning
There are various theories on this point: some believe that the duvet should be washed once every 5 years and "passed" with the vacuum cleaner regularly, this is because washing could ruin the fabric. Other experts argue that it is the fatty oils of human skin, and not the washes, that ruin the quilts. On average it is recommended to wash them once every 3 years. Whether or not you want to wash your quilt regularly, the point is to remember to be careful.
Step 2. Repair any holes by sewing them and treat the stains, if any
Before washing the duvet, check that it has no rips or openings. Small damages usually occur that can be fixed with needle and thread without major problems. While this may take a long time, it will prevent the holes from becoming gashes. If there are stains, apply a mild cleanser to the area to be treated. Never use bleach or anything else: water and sodium bicarbonate or plain sparkling water will be fine.
Step 3. Choose the gentlest program of your washing machine
Add the detergent and let it fill up a little. Wait for the washing machine to shake itself a bit before putting the duvet inside. To keep the padding evenly distributed, try adding a clean, white pair of tennis shoes to the washer (and possibly the dryer as well).
Step 4. Move the duvet to the dryer (if any), along with your shoes, and turn it on to the minimum
Check the dryer every half hour, take out the duvet and fluff it, as it's the filling that keeps you warm.
Step 5. Finish drying by placing the duvet to hang out
To avoid stains or anything else, spread it indoors or out on a hanging line (this could take more than 3 hours), hold on and keep fluffing it as much as possible.
