Do you need a new miniskirt? Making a skirt from an old pair of jeans is incredibly easy, and it gives new life to the garment, making it trendy. Read below for instructions on how to create your own custom skirt from any pair of old jeans.
Steps
Step 1. Find a pair of old jeans
As long as the top of the jeans is still in great condition, there is no reason to worry about the bottom. Those with holes on the knee and with frayed ends are ideal.
Step 2. Measure from the waistline to the outside hem for a skirt of suitable length
The size you choose will be the limit for your hem: leave about 2.5 cm more fabric. Mark with a pencil (or sewing chalk).
Step 3. Cut the trouser legs, following the drawn line
Or, for a more accurate result, leave a few inches of play for now, and refine later. After you undo the knots of the seams on the crotch, the overall shape will change. If it is a pencil skirt, measure both sides and make a clean cut, if it is a more flared skirt, divide the fabric into sections and cut them separately, so as not to risk the skirt being too short in the middle. Spreading out a complex surface and taking its "flat" measurements can distort the three-dimensional shape. Take your measurements, mark with chalk and wear the garment in front of a mirror or a friend, and only cut when you are sure
Step 4. Turn the jeans inside out
With the help of a seam ripper, undo the inside seams. This will free up the fabric around the legs and crotch.
Step 5. Cut to straighten the curve of the crotch seams
Leave some room for the new seam. Repeat the crotch seam, this time straight.
The flare of the skirt will depend on the amount of fabric you choose to keep in the inseam. Certainly a flared skirt gives more freedom of movement. Before cutting, experiment with simulating sewing with safety pins
Step 6. Decide if you want a hemmed or frayed edge
The hem takes a little more work because it's a meticulous type of seam, while a frayed edge is easier to make, and still very fashionable anyway.
-
Let the edge remain naturally frayed.
-
Or hem, preferably with the sewing machine.
Step 7. Decorate the denim skirt with patches, beads or sequins
This step is optional, but it can be a lot of fun and also useful for greatly improving the look of the fabric if it is a little faded… or damaged.
Step 8. Put on your new denim skirt
Place a pair of leggings or colored nylons underneath to keep your legs warm. For the summer, bare legs are fine.
Advice
- If the fabric is prone to fraying, do a zigzag basting along the edge of the fabric before sewing.
- For an even hem, measure with a tape measure, starting from the ground. As you try on the skirt, ask a friend to measure and mark the hem with pins.
- To practice, buy a pair of jeans at a thrift store.
