Cast iron can be painted with an oil-based metal primer and paint. If the iron is rusted or was previously painted, the rust or old paint must be removed before starting to apply the new paint. Oil paint can be a bit messy and it can take several hours to dry. You can also apply spray paint on cast iron. Follow these steps to learn how to do it.
Steps
Step 1. Remove the rust
You can use a wire brush to take it off. Alternatively, a sandblaster or chemicals to eliminate rust are also good, if this is really a lot and you are not afraid of causing damage to the structure.
Wear appropriate safety equipment such as gloves, goggles, and a respirator if you work with a power tool or chemicals
Step 2. Sand or otherwise remove existing paint
You can perform sanding lightly. Collect and dispose of removed or scratched paint properly, as it may be lead-based.
Step 3. Clean the cast iron
Remove dirt, dust, stains, or other elements such as cobwebs. You may need a brush for this.
Step 4. Put on some old clothes to paint
Maybe you will have to throw them away once the job is done.
Step 5. Prepare a work surface in an outdoor or well-ventilated area
Stand on a flat surface or use material to collect paint that can drip during the painting stage. A table or a tarp are two possible options.
Step 6. Keep a clean cloth and white spirit near the work area
The cloth allows you to clean your hands while you paint, while the alcoholic spirit of the white spirit makes it easier to clean the paint tools and dilutes the paint.
Step 7. Apply a coat of primer to the bare metal
Choose an oil-based one. Follow the directions on the package to find out how many coats you need to apply. Allow the first coat time to dry before applying another if necessary.
Step 8. Apply the oil-based paint to the metal
Dip the brush 0.6 cm into the paint each time. This prevents too much paint from dripping down the brush.
Apply two coats of paint. Wait 24 hours for the first coat to dry before applying the second
Advice
- If you paint an object that conducts heat, such as a cast iron radiator, be aware that metallic paint conducts less heat than matte paint.
- Purchase the cast iron object's primer, paints, and cleaning and painting products at a hardware store.
- Use a high-temperature spray paint as an alternative to oil-based paint. Move the paint can in a linear motion as you work to ensure an even coat.
- You can spray cast iron radiators or other objects with a primer and then spray the paint once the primer has dried.
- Consider hiring a professional to smooth out the rust or remove the paint from the cast iron.
