Do you want to call London? Well today is your lucky day. Follow the steps in this article and you can easily call a London landline or mobile phone.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Find the right numbers
Step 1. Find the area code and code for direct international dialing
The code for direct international dialing is the one that allows you to call a number that is outside the borders of the country where you are. Remember that each state has a different one. For example, if you are calling from the United States, the code is 011.
- Search for the international dialing code on the Internet by typing “- The country name - International dialing code”. You can also try in English. In this case, look for the exit code or IDD (International direct dialing).
- The most common codes are 011 - for the United States and other nations that have signed up to the North American Numbering Plan - and 00, for Mexico, Europe and many other states.
- For some countries, such as Brazil, you may even find more than one code. The choice will depend on the telephone company you will rely on for the call.
Step 2. Find the country code of the state you want to call
It is usually a one, two or three digit number uniquely associated with a country. The UK one is 44.
If you are already in the UK, you can avoid using this number. However, you will need to add a 0 before entering the London area code, which will then be 020 instead of the normal 20 (to be used, instead, in the case of international calls)
Step 3. Find the city code
It is a one, two or three digit number associated with a specific geographic location within the borders of a nation. London's is 20.
Step 4. If you are calling a mobile, dial 7 after 20
For example, if you are calling from the United States you will need to dial 011 44 20 7 followed by your mobile number.
Step 5. Find the phone number of the London company, residence or mobile phone you want to call
Be aware that landlines in the UK have 8 digits.
Step 6. Remember, however, that London mobile numbers have 9 digits
Method 2 of 2: Call
Step 1. Check the local time and avoid calling when it is 2 am in London
As in the whole of the United Kingdom, in the winter months the city is synchronized with Greenwich Mean Time, while in the summer it adopts the so-called British Summer Time. A curiosity: London is located almost exactly on the prime meridian, which is precisely that of Greenwich, a very interesting geographical position.
On the last Sunday in March, the clocks move forward one hour, and then return to Greenwhich Mean Time on the last Sunday in October
Step 2. Make sure you type all numbers correctly
Once you have found the right prefixes, digitize them correctly and wait for the call sign. For example, if you are in New York, in the United States, and you need to call London (let's say it's 5555-5555) the number to dial will be 011-44-20-5555-5555.
If you are calling a mobile, the number to dial is 011-44-20-7-5555-55555 instead
Step 3. Don't forget to check the cost of the call
International calls can be very expensive. The best thing to do is to contact your telephone company and ask for information on subscribing to a telephone plan that includes calls abroad. Or, you can buy a prepaid card and save some money.
