SoundCloud is a social media platform that allows users to record, upload and download songs and share them with other users. Most of the songs on SoundCloud are available for download directly from the website, but in some cases users may find themselves having to use a third party tool to download some songs. You can use tools built into Chrome, Firefox or Safari, or a Firefox extension. You can also choose from many sites that will do the job for you.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Use Chrome, Firefox or Safari
Step 1. Open the page of the song you want in Chrome, Firefox or Safari
These browsers give you the ability to use developer tools that allow you to find the audio file on the SoundCloud page. This method will cause you to download a 128kbps file, which may be lower quality than the original.
If you can, use the official download method provided by the artist. If the artist has made the download free and the limit has not yet been reached, you will see the "⇩ Download" button next to the song. With that button you will help promote the artist and get the high quality version of the file. Use the method below only if no other free downloads are available and you can't purchase the song
Step 2. Open Developer Tools
Press F12 (Windows) or ⌘ Cmd + ⌥ Opt + I (Mac). The tools will open as a sidebar or at the bottom of the screen on all three browsers.
Step 3. Click on the Network tab
You'll find it at the top of the Developer pane.
Step 4. Reload the website with the song you want to download
You will notice that the Network tab will reset immediately and items with bars and times will begin to appear in the "Timeline" column.
Make sure the song is playing
Step 5. Sort the Network tab according to the "Size" column
Click on that column so that the larger object appears at the top. The SoundCloud audio stream will almost always be the first entry, because it should be the largest file on the page.
In the "Type" column you should read "audio / mpeg" or "mpeg"
Step 6. Right click on the entry and select "Open in new tab"
If you have selected the correct item, in the new tab you will only see the play buttons and the song should start right away.
If the song does not open in the new tab, you may have chosen the wrong entry in the Network tab. Reload the page and search again
Step 7. Save the page
When you've uploaded the audio file to a separate tab, you can save it directly to your computer. You will need to give it a recognizable name and choose a folder to download it to.
- Chrome - click on the Chrome menu button (☰) and select "Save page as".
- Firefox - click the Firefox Menu button (☰) and select "Save Page".
- Safari - click on the "Safari" menu and select "Save page as".
- You can also press Ctrl + S (Windows) or ⌘ Cmd + S (Mac) in all browsers.
Method 2 of 3: Use DownloadHelper for Firefox
Step 1. Click the Firefox Menu button and select "Add-ons"
You can install a browser extension called "DownloadHelper", which will allow you to easily download audio files from SoundCloud. As with the other options in this article, you will get a 128 kbps file.
Step 2. Click "Get Add-ons" in the left menu, then search for "DownloadHelper"
Step 3. Click the button
Install next to "Video DownloadHelper".
Even if the title says "Video", it will also work with SoundCloud audios.
Step 4. Open the SoundCloud page of the song you want to download
Step 5. Start playing the song
You will notice that the DownloadHelper button will start to animate in the Firefox toolbar.
Step 6. Click the DownloadHelper button and then the song
You will be prompted to choose a location to download the song.
Method 3 of 3: Using a Download Service
Step 1. Open the SoundCloud page of the song you want
If you don't have the ability to use the browsers of the previous method, or you don't want to learn how to use developer tools, you can use one of the many online services to download songs. Typically the file will be of a slightly lower quality, because the song will be recompressed before downloading.
Step 2. Copy the URL of the song page
Copy the entire address from the bar to the clipboard. Select the entire string and press Ctrl / ⌘ Cmd + C, or right click on the selection and click "Copy".
Step 3. Open the download service site
You can choose from many download services on SoundCloud, and almost all of them operate the same way. Some of the most used sites include:
- StreamPocket.com
- Anything2MP3.com
- Soundflush.com
Step 4. Paste the URL into the field on the download page
In the center of the page you should see a field that allows you to enter the URL.
Step 5. Click the "Download" or "Convert" button
On StreamPocket, it looks like a mesh. The conversion process will begin, which may take a few moments.
Note that many sites have advertisements on the page that can try to trick you into clicking on a fake Download button. Use an ad blocker if you're having trouble finding the right button
Step 6. Right click on the link provided and select "Save link as"
A window will open that will allow you to save the new MP3 file to your computer.
