Team Fortress 2, which is now available for free, has been called a comical and entertaining game. If you are one of the people who have just started playing and don't know where to start, don't worry! This article will walk you through the basics of the game and everything you need to know.
Steps
Step 1. Play tutorial mode first
To find it, look at the bottom of the main home page and look for a spiked ball with a graduate hat on it. You will follow four lessons that will summarize an online match.
Step 2. Play on a quality computer
You will need to have a constant frame rate of at least 30-40 FPS for the game to be tolerable. Also for this reason, play on servers with no more than 24 players. Team Fortress 2 was designed with this type of lag in mind. But if your computer is very good, you could support 34 player servers.
Step 3. Don't overdo the video settings
Unless you're using a high-end computer, performance will likely be more useful to you than graphics quality. The following tips guarantee you an increase in frame rate.
-
Set all settings to Low if the recommended settings are Medium.
-
You may think it helps to turn down the sound quality, but the sounds are very important in TF2!
-
Disable anti-aliasing.
Step 4. Know the levels
Know which team has the leading edge. In most maps, REDs defend against BLUES.
Step 5. Learn the strengths and weaknesses of all classes
Find out which classes are best suited to which maps.
Step 6. Team Fortress 2 is a team game, so kamikaze tactics don't work
You are not playing Call of Duty, and you will have to work as a team to win. According to your objective, you will have to defend an area or conquer it.
Step 7. Communicate
If you have a microphone, use it! Communicating with the rest of the team is key to winning, even if you just write in the chat. Make a plan for the maps and classes so you know where each member is and where they are heading.
Step 8. Configure the keys
In Team Fortress 2 there are many functions linked to a button, all of which are customizable. Move the keys in the way that suits you best. With features like quick weapon swapping enabled, you'll be more effective in the heart of the fight if you don't have to look at the keyboard.
Step 9. Survive
It is easy to keep committing suicide by running towards enemies and shooting randomly - but don't forget that you will be much more useful to your team if you stay alive. Each team has a Medic who can heal teammates. Ask for his help when you need to be healed. Doctors can also temporarily boost your health by up to 150%!
Step 10. If there is no Medic on your team, do it yourself
It is impossible to win without him. Playing as a Medic is also a great way to learn a map. (Follow the same advice for each class. If there is no class member on your team, do it yourself!)
Step 11. Complete the objectives
Each objective you complete with a certain class gives you points to unlock a special weapon of your liking. After reaching a milestone, you may earn a weapon. Practice with the weapon and find the best tactic. There is also a "Reward System" in the game, thanks to which you will be able to receive hats and other weapons.
Step 12. Learn about the balance of power
Only professional Scouts can take out Heavy. A Pyro can reflect Bullets, easily eliminating Soldiers and Demoman. Snipers are easy targets for Spies, because they have a tendency to stand still while taking aim and don't look around much. (These are classes meant to balance others, but it doesn't mean there is only one method to delete a class)
Step 13. Understand the game mechanics
The chance of random critical hits is higher if you've dealt more damage in the last 5 seconds
Most weapons deal less damage at greater range. Some weapons are unaffected by range, and others do even more damage at greater range. Critical hits are not affected by damage reduction (a critical dot hit by the Scout's Scattergun will deal 18 damage at any distance)
Advice
- Try not to take the game too seriously. The Team Fortress 2 community is more jovial than that of Call of Duty or Halo. Many of your teammates may not play seriously. Do not be angry. This cheerful community is what makes TF2 unique.
- You will die many times, but don't take it personally. Learn from your mistakes.
- Keep the volume up to make sure you hear the enemies behind you! Especially the spies who use the Dead Ringer.
- When learning to play, choose one of the simpler classes and modes. By playing your first game as a spy, you will end up ineffective and feel lost. The suggested classes are Soldier, Heavy or Engineer.
- If you've never played class-based team shooters before, be prepared to adapt your play style.
- If you prefer to play more seriously, competitive leagues like UGC and ESEA are for you. Head over to their websites to sign up and play against teams of similar skill to yours.
