Carnival, Halloween, parties, masquerades, plays, and other special occasions often require you to wear a costume. Buying them in a store can be very expensive, and the standard measurements can make it almost impossible to find the perfect size. Learning how to make your own costume can save you money and allow you to customize the style and size according to your needs. Follow some of these tips for making a lion costume.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Part 1: The Body
Step 1. Purchase an orange, brown or yellow shirt and pants to wear as the lion's body
- The choice of color depends on your personal taste.
- Tracksuits or jogging suits are best for the winter months. Look for a long or short-sleeved t-shirt and cotton pants or shorts for the warmer months.
- The costume will look better if you buy the exact same color pants and shirt.
- Search in stores or online for exact sizes and colors.
Step 2. Use a pair of gloves of a similar or identical color to the pants and shirt to cover your hands
Method 2 of 4: Part 2: The Tail
Step 1. Roll up a piece of fabric, similar in color to pants and shirt, to create the tail
Step 2. Glue the tail with fabric glue or sew it to keep the cylindrical shape
Step 3. Fill it with foam rubber or other material
Step 4. Close the ends of the tail with glue or sewing them
Step 5. Attach the "hairs" to one end of the tail using tape or thread
Step 6. Attach the tail to the back of the pants by sewing it, gluing it or applying a safety pin
Method 3 of 4: Part 3: The Mane
Step 1. Create a hood that fits the head of the wearer
Use the same material used for the tail
Step 2. Choose what kind of material you want to use for the lion's mane
Ribbon, thread, or fringed yarn will work fine. The amount needed depends on the size of the costume and how thick you want the mane to be
Step 3. Attach the loop material all the way around the hood from one side of the neck opening to the other
- You can attach the material by hand by sewing it or gluing it with fabric glue.
- Each piece of mane hair should hang in a medium to small ring. Thicker manes often have a better effect than shorter ones.
Step 4. Join the hood to the back of the shirt used for the body
Put a piece of Velcro on the hood and shirt. This will allow the wearer to take it off if necessary
Method 4 of 4: Part 4: The Muzzle
Step 1. Paint a lion face on the wearer's face
- Face paint, the kind you buy for carnival or Halloween costumes, is the safest for sensitive skin areas.
- Cover your entire face with yellow face paint.
- Highlight the nose by painting a brown or orange triangle around it.
- Add black stripes for the mustache.
Advice
- The face painting can be elaborate or simple.
- A good seamstress can make a one-of-a-kind lion body suit if you prefer.
